Oh dear sorry to say it looks like you have a scrap set of rods and damage to your crank there judging by those blued big ends.

How's the block cracked? seems a bit odd

        Hi Gaz,
Great to have some proper detail on the engine. Read your article in RF last night - good man. See you're sticking with a NA YB - not tempted to go for a more modern engine - duratech etc? Much difference expense wise? Reason for asking is that I currently have a vulcan xflow in my RS & am thinking of putting a more correct engine back in & wondering about tuning/cost etc.

I live in South London (car is in storage elsewhere) - pls shout if you guys are going any Ford events/meets as haven't got myself plugged into the London scene yet...

        Cheers

The engine raced for a few years in the Ford saloon car championship with the previous owner who screamed the arse of it at 9000revs for 20mins a race !!!!! Plus it's got a 93mm bore so it's common for them too crack in this way . Even his new £10,000 race zetec engine had cracked bores last year !!!!!!!
The blue/brown colour on the rods was most likey from Nov 07 when the dry sump belt snapped and the oil pressure dropped off too nought . Then in Dec 08 i did an oil change , primed the oil pump and started the car . After a few seconds the oil pressure went to nought and i sat there watching it and waiting for it too rise for 30secs before i switched it off . Or maybe it was because i had water mixing with the oil for 6 months before i found out the cause . Either way it's foooooked now !!!!!!

Hi Laurie . The South London scene is massive in the spring and summer months but dead at the moment . Nothing happens until April time so the RS central day meet at Santa Pod is the first bit of action in 2009 .
I didn't bother with duratecs etc because they are crap unless you spend £10,000+ on bits and then another few bob getting them too fit in an escort . The pinto based 16v engines are far cheaper and just as fast/faster if built right . Plus they bolt straight in after 5 mins !!!!!!

Here's a closer look at the rods with their bearings in place . No2 is on the left and no1 is on the right (the knackerd one) . Only the bearings in no1 are shot , all the other 3 are fine

Here's a closer look at the crank , it looks fine considering the state of the bearings in no1

I guess you've spent a fair bit on that engine, new rods / pistons / head mods & build and are now going to have to do it all over again with a new block - that's painful on the wallet.

Have you thought about putting a Duratec in it? You can buy these engines new pretty cheap now & you won't have the hassle of inherent design flaws with older engine technology. Plus there are plenty of reliable engine builders to choose from. Put your money into the rods and pistons for the duratec would be my advice - maybe a lesson to be learned from your experience - which is good to share on a forum like this.

                    Hope you get it sorted.

I bought my engine secondhand and it was cheap (only £1000 more than my pinto i sold) . I've since had the head refurbed + made better too increase speed and fingers crossed the bottom end will cost about £500 in machining + parts to re-do (unless it needs new rods of course +£600) so all in all not bad really .
I'd never buy a Duratec unless i could afford a top notch one , even then i'm already as fast as all of those so far that have turned up fitted inside a normal street legal Escort . Personally i would rather have a Warrior , a Millington or a 2.3 atmo cossie over a Mazda duratec anyday .

good post, you havnt had much luck with that motor all in all. its common for one bearing to let go, ive had 3 like new and one thats worn, then spun and totaly mashed up.

lol , there's no petty moderators on here too upset and everyone understands cars unlike some other forums .
My engines been fine until the water loss and set many blistering low 13sec 1/4 mile times (3x 13.2sec , 4x 13.3secs) which is unheard of for a proper full weight street legal machine at Santa Pod .
The Bottom end should be cheap too rebuild as well and then i should go even faster in 2009 . Hoping for 1/4mile times under 13secs !!!!!! .......
