Thanks Guys, and LOL at Jon.
Yesterday I took the windscreen out, wipers off, grille and headlamps off, plus a few other bits.
Today I was going to get the passenger floor welded in but forgot I needed some new 0.6 contact tips, so got a load ordered on the bay and set too finding out how bad that rust across the bottom of the screen really was.
Off with the scuttle, (im not sure if the old one is a saver yet until I give it a good looking at), and those holes are now slots . I have left a few bits of the old metalwork in for now to keep the original position until I make and fit some new sections.
A little clean up and a grinding session later
I have put some galvafoid on until I have made up some new sections.
Bit of work needed here on the A pillar, the N/S one isnt as bad
Off with the O/S wing, it dosent appear to be in bad condition, just needs a new front edge on it, if im not happy with it when I clean it up I will get another wing. A new wing rail is needed, as this one is rusty and weak
Looks surprisingly decent here, probably a different story once all the underseal is off. I have a new A post ready as this one is shot.
Looks decent here too so far
This needs attention, the support leg has split away from the pan from front to back
Tony get that dash top off for f**ks sake it will be riddled with grinding matter lol. I was thinking about producing a full length repair section for the bottom side of the screen apature, I could fold it in one piece and shrink it to the exact profile of the car but not sure if it's a part many people would require.
Don't worry mate, it gets covered while I'm grinding, its prob one of the best things on the car lol. Why don't you mention the part on the remanufactured section on the forum and see if it gets any interest there mate.
Little update,
While the Mrs was at work today, I thought I might as well get some plates made up ready to weld into position once the new contact tips come.
Had fun and games making these up, but im happy with them
Before and after pics of one of the smaller plates
and before and after pics of the O/S bottom windscreen corner, there is an intermediate plate here that forms part of the inner A pillar that I still have to make a repair patch for before I can fit this one in, you can see the rust holes in it.
Still no contact tips, so decided to tackle the O/S A pillar and get some underseal off from under the innerwing area
The bottom of the new A pillar gave me a headache, I couldnt work out why the sill wouldnt sit over the bottom of the A post properly
After loads of measuring and checking I decided to look at the N/S one and hey presto I found the problem, the pressing was 7mm more on the O/S compared to the N/S one, so a bit of adjustment was needed to allow the sill to sit over properly
Also the bottom hinge area was not pressed into the metal enough to align with the inner A post, so that needed a bit of tweeking as well, at least it all lines up now at last
Todays bonus was when I took the O/S rear qtr glass out and saw the near on perfect metalwork, these usually rot like hell here
Also looking fairly decent under all that underseal too
Yes Jon, Im watching for the postman coming with them lol. I have heard others say the electric chisels are good, but I use the heat gun and chisel to scrape it off Gary. Im thinking of getting one of those electric chisels, how quick are they at removing the underseal Jon ?
Im getting there Davey, I get inspiration from yours and Jon's great work.
Mig tips arrived this afternoon so im up and running lol.
Didnt spend much time on it today, but managed to get the little patches and part of the skuttle welded in and dressed a little, looking better already
Plus a lick of galvafroid for now
Still a bit more to do here but im going to concentrate on the rest of the windscreen bottom area, then the O/S 'A' post and then the passenger floor.
