I really can't see the big investor players giving a monkeys about a 15 grand car.
So they got out of property and invested in rusty 30 year old Fords.... I don't think so.
Sorry to rant but the "problem" with the "scene" is people continually bleat on about prices and the past. 'Kin hell they're not even that expensive in the grand scheme of things. Yeah yeah 10/15/20 grand is silly but they're obviously "worth" that as they sell.
Boring boring boring same old rubbish.
Yeah yeah they used to be £6.50 a dozen but times have changed live with it.
If you don't like the price don't pay it and take up knitting.sigpic

Now it could be that the market in old Escorts caught up but the more likely scenario is that a few people (not institutions) have seen buying cars and parts as a way of making omney seeing as the rest of the economy is kaput.
As the banks stopped lending and thus people couldn't buy a second or third house (by to let) then they found other ways of using their disposable incomes to make money.
It's like the classic car boom at the end of the eighties, when E-Types, Lotus Cortinas and Mk1 Cooper Ss went ballistic pricewise, then came the crash...
The point of whether 10-20 K is a lot of money is a matter of perspective and, as these were cheap (working man's) Escorts, not Porsches or Ferraris, I think many find those prices quite steep. A cheap hobby has turned into an expensive game of soldiers for most.

The trouble is they forget that the money has to come from somewhere and if nobody can afford to buy then prices will inevitably fall again (whether property, cars or whatever).

It's a matter of supply and demand, doesn't matter if it's houses, cars or parts. Difference with the old days is that if you bought a NOS rear spoiler from Roy Nunn at ND 1993 for £100 only a few people would know that. Now if the same item fetches £1000 on ebay everyone will have seen it and that becomes the (new) norm.

If you cannot afford the parts or cars do what others have always done. Fit aftermarket parts or buy an 1100 and dress it up as an RS? It amazes me the number of people buying a Sport or Pop and claiming its an RS! By buying vinyl graphics and buying a V5 of ebay. Who gives a shit, you may ask, only the poor bugger who buys it afterwards and is defrauded of his money. Real Escort users drive any spec of Escort as long as its not FWD! And enjoy it too many trailer queens poncing around!

They are MK2 Ford Escorts and prices are now out of the reach of lots of people that could and have bought them over the last 20 years.
Yes inflation increases things, but you could by a very good solid RS2000 for £6k and an RS1800 for £15k in 2006 (8 years ago). Even with 5% inflation a year that doesn't come close to where these cars have been priced in the last couple of years.Cheers

As the prices increased they become less justifiable and less likely to be used regularly due to the value and money tied up in them.
Also, I don't remember finding many if any mint RS2000's for £2k in 2000Cheers

You said solid not mint.
I got mine then so I know they were around.
But why worry about using a lets say 15k solid RS2000?
I dare say people don't worry about using your 15k everyday car.
I know it may sound shocking too some but they are only cars that are insured and replaceable.
Oh and don't say because its an investment...Getting bored with the idiots

You can pick up a 3yo car easily to replace your current everyday drive.
We know how hard it is to replace a good MK1 or MK2
I didn't buy any of my classic cars as an investment and usually broke even or even lost money on most of them, but they are my hobby so I look on it like a golf membership or smoking and the loses are my cost of enjoyment.Cheers
