No AVO or national day for us this year, just a massive pitch at Ford fair
Still got the parts just can't afford to take them to all the shows.....

After Stanford hall RSOC members voted on where they wanted
their nd to be. The majority chose donnington and the high
prices that go with it, so that's where it is because the majority
want a nd with track time. Personally I voted for Stanford,
but it's a democracy and the majority got what they wanted.
The committee just acted upon their wishes.

I have attended this event pretty much every year from late 80's thru to about four years ago, the last time being 2008. So after a four year break, I was very much lookin foward to my day @ Donnington. Happy to pay the going rate of £18.00 & expecting a big action packed day out in RS heaven!

Took my own fodder etc, as one can always expect the food/drinks traders to whip ones pants down!

Must say I was shocked by how much the event has shrunk...and whilst I understand that the modern stuff is part of the marque, I too noticed a big drop in the number of pre 1981 cars. I think the AVO club were tucked in the top corner with only approx half a dozen cars???

I also remember there used to be a good selection of big power hardcore cars, often from overseas...nothing like that anymore tho. No Cossie powered Focuses/Mk3 Escorts/Fiestas ect etc. Only one RS200, albeit standard & lovely, there were no other big power RS200's. No RS500 touring cars (I think they where @ Silverstone Classic possibly along with numerous other missing attendees)

A big lack of decent trade stands with very little second hand stuff.
It was the first time I've ever seen Roy Nunn sitting down being quiet & looking bored!!!!

So I spent all morning mooching round the paddock & regional clubs area. The afternoon plan was to wander down the infield to watch the track action & see loads more cars...there weren't any! I've never seen the infield empty at this event.

NO BAILEY MK2 ESCORT OUT ON TRACK
...infact very little of any interest out on track. Only two groups & only approx 60-odd % of it was Ford. (Wish I'd ave booked the Starlet in for a few laps now!!)

That said, I still had a really good day probably helped along with a four year break. Maybe the smaller event is a a victim of peeps being skint & a clash with other events. However, I still think the organisers do a fantastic job & long may it continue!

The RS Owners Club caters for all marques of RS cars so you will never please everyone whereas The Lakes Tour is specifically for Old Skool Fords so the turnout of MK1 and MK2 Escorts is going to be greater and the traders will prioritise for this show as it makes better financial sense.

Unfortunately due to money, weather and other elements we may never get back to the National Day turnouts of the late 90's and early 2000's but it is up to all members to contribute to the day. If there are few old skool cars turning up then expect the traders that sell for these cars to give it a miss.
                        Cheers

Oulton Park is not far away from Donnington. How come they have recently had a full weekend of track action and classic car show there with free entry for exhibitors ?

Has this venue been suggested to the RSOC Comittee ? They may be able to liaise with Stuart Holmes, the organiser from www.cheshireautopromotions.co.uk to see if they can accomodate something next year ? Food for thought
