  • Didnt get much done tonight as i had to put a cv joint and drop link on the van but did take a cardboard template off the inner front leg and quickly knocked up a repair section.

Should fit ok i think will double check the measurement tommorow. Think im going to drill off the top hat strengthener and put the full new piece in to the factory join.

Hopefully the one template should do the inner and outer for both sides with a little modifacation, i think it took longer making the template than the repair section

    • Never got as much time on the car as i would have liked this weekend but did manage to get a bit done today. Removed the top hat strengthener and removed the old rotton lumps of front and center chassis leg then repaired the front part of center chassis rail

Cut the new outer piece down to size and fitted it up.

Not bothering with jack holes as i think its just one more hole for water and dirt to get in. Then spun it over on the spit and removed the inner part of the chassis, made a small repair to the thicker part behind as it had a bit of grot on it then weld through primered it.

Just got this repair section to fit on this side now and then weld top hat strengthener back on other side. Im glad i used the thick strong steel for this but it is very difficult to work with even with a folder and guillotine.

        • Excellent work mate, your repair panels look spot on, deffo quality stuff and your engine is looking good too.

If you want it, get it, before someone else beats you to it.

                • lovely looking car there mate! what welder you using? I'm looking at a Clarke 150 turbo bit unsure yet

                  • I have a Clarke 165 turbo which is ok and a Clarke 195 turbo which is better, just bought the 165 then my dad gave me his 195! Personally I believe the hobby range welders Clarke sip etc are all much the same but ok if set up properly. I've found that the 195 is happier with 0.6 wire and the 165 better with 0.8. My landlord has a miller 165 mig and that's 10 times the welder my 195 is but about 3 times the price! Be sure to practice plenty and make sure you have good penetration. Doesn't matter if it doesn't look to pretty aslong as it's penetrated well

                    • Not much of an update im affraid but a little works better than nothing. Manage to refite top hat strengthener on chassis reapair, Finished welding the front crossmember to front panel and tidied up a few more bits underneath. Only got the one pic as my iphone accidently got run over outside the house

Hoping to get the other chassis leg repaired this week then theres not much more rust to deal with just lots of bits on the front end to tidy up with the powerfile, didnt have one back then and repairs finished with the grinder look rough compared to what was done with the powerfile recently.

                              • Bit of an update, phone got destroyed so no pics until i got another. All of chassis complete from front to back now so thats a biggy off the list.
                                Passenger side

                                Drivers side

Decided to get rid of the bad bit of the bulkhead that ended up holes when i blasted it so cut it out

Then made a new piece up and welded in place, it looks a simple piece to make but took about an hour of beating on a sand bag with a wooden hammer to get it right.

Now thats done im starting back at the front again and going over anybits i missed/ arent happy with, i was maybe a bit keen when i stared and my skills have improved since then so hopefully this will be the last time i work upto the back of the car lol.
First thing to sort are the holes i missed from the old bolt on chassis mounts

Then this area around the a pillar front, not sure why i didnt repair this before i fitted the splash panel but its just a long strip metal really so shouldnt take a lot of making.

Hopefully more done towards the end of the week.
