  • Turned my hand to the electric fan next. I had three, but all rattled when shaken. Managed to judiciously disassemble them - in one the magnets shattered when I took the casing apart. Out of three I managed to create one fairly good one and one emergency reserve. Play on the shaft isn't brilliant, so I don't know how long they'll last. Have just shot another on eBay. Wrote to Kenlowe to see if they could help out but, of course, no reply. Not even an acknowledgement. I must be frank and say that is definitely a British speciality - the "can't even be naffed to send an eMail saying 'sorry we can't help' " attitude.

Tried out my hand at semi-matt black. Not as easy as I thought - paint takes ages to dry.

      • Wasn't planning to do 'owt on the engine innards as it had been overhauled only a few hundred km ago (albeit several years now). Finally stripped it down and wire brushed the block for a lick of paint and then couldn't resist the temptation to look at the bearings etc.

Good job I did. The company who did the block many eons ago made the generous offer to reassemble it for me too. There was so much thread sealer on the main cap bolts that it had even oozed into the area between main cap and block and they weren't even seating properly. Numerous other gaffs like piston ring positioning etc. Fortunately, the engine had hardly been run since overhaul, so I corrected it all and re-assembled it. Cross Fingers!

In the meantime, I took the cylinder head to get hardened valve seats fitted. Got talked into a full gas-flow jobby. Should be ready in a week or so. Small Escort specialist in Augsburg - just down the road from my German address.

        • Can't believe that, 15 years ago I got talked into putting 2.8i legs on to lower the car and then I THREW THE ORIGINAL FORD GROUP 1 YELLOW BILSTEIN LEGS IN THE SCRAP BIN!!! Who would have thought .......

I still dream that I didn't ever actually drive them to the council dump and that I'll find them in a corner of the garage one day

Gave the legs a brush off and a lick of paint.

            • Reassembly has started. Self explanatory really. Steering rack was an end-of-line offer from local Ford dealer in 1985 and has been stored since then. TRE's off the 'Bay.

What paint did you use? And was the colour a good match for the proper bilstein blue?.

                                Cheers
