Well done Alan good result..I have had 2 run ins with the DVLA over tax/sorn on cars. The first one was a mk6 escort I bought as a cat C, I told the DVLA that I had the car but was not going to register it in my name as the registered keeper as I wasnt going to keep it. They were happy with that. Then after I repaired the car and had the VOSA check done and sold the car, three weeks later I got a fine from the DVLA for driving a car without tax 3 months earlier. I appealed the fine saying can they explain to me how I can tax a cat C car 3 months before the VOSA check ???? Fine cancelled with an apology letter
The second run in was recently when I registered a mk2 escort in my name that has been off the road since 1997. A week after the V5C came for it I got a letter from the DVLA threatening to fine me for not taxing or putting the car on SORN. I ignored the letter until the fine came, I then got in touch with them to enlighten them on their own rule that a car can not be put on SORN until after it had been taxed which I wasnt going to do and didnt have to do, as the car was off the road pre-sorn so it is exempt as per their rules. Fine cancelled .
Anyone who has a pre-sorn car who is worried about registering in their own name because of SORN etc doesnt have to be, as long as the car has not been taxed after SORN was first introduced you can register it in your name and you do not have to tax or SORN it.
One last thing, if you buy a car with an old V5 and dont register it in your name, then you can still use this to tax the car at a Post Office once you fill in your details section. I have this info on a DVLA letter when I enquired in Sept 15.
