Which is why I plan to hold the first viewing(s) away from my house, perhaps at a relative's house, but will make it clear that this isn't my home address (otherwise I might look dodgy). If they come back to collect another day from my home address and then suddenly pull out of the deal, then alarm bells will be ringing (perhaps literally).

To be honest if i was a buyer and the seller asked to meet in a venue away from the car with that ammount of cash I would be very nervous

These days, what with Google Earth, Facebook and the like, as long as somebody's got a contact number or an e-mail address surely it's got to be pretty easy to find out where someone lives and without even turning up to the appointment to view the car?

As said, if your talking nigh on 50K, it's probably safer to use an auction house (a real one). It's a big, big risk to take with that sort of wedge.

As for cheques, do be serious; you can't take cheques, that's just insane . I'd be highly sceptical when it comes to cash as well, there's a lot of funny money about.

Anything above 500 quid and that's it for me, bank transfer with a counterfoil for the transaction. Preferrably the money being on the account a couple of days before collection.

I suppose one trick you could use, is to hide an old mobile with an active SIM in the car (would work like the old Tracker systems used to) only taking the phone out to charge it up. If the car's nicked, you could track the position of the phone.

If the person selling the car has access to the keys and the log book is in their name then they must be relatively trustworthy.

I don't know if this is in reply to me, but I wouldn't expect them to turn up with the cash for the initial viewing, just when they collect the car, when I'd give them my home address anyway. I'd stand the risk of losing some buyers perhaps, but hopefully they would understand my caution if I explained my reasons.

I'd have to avoid giving a land line number then I guess, not sure how to avoid email issues though, unless I risked using my work one...

Not a bad idea anyway but I think I'll be getting a proper tracker installed, trouble is can I trust the tracker installer?

I think the whole Escort scene is stupid now, no longer fun

                scared to use them
                scared to buy them
                scared to sell them
                scared of pattern parts
                scared of ringers
                scared of Ozzie cars

Thought hobbies were supposed to be fun

Use can use disposable e-mail addresses, or create an alias using your existing account, not forgetting of course if you use a client (Outlook etc) to set the sending address to the alias, or you send your "normal address" in the reply...

The mobile phone thing occurred to me the other day, it's a use for all those old handsets you accumulate over the years...

Might have somthing to do with watching an episode of Minder when Rose Mellor's Merc goes missing. Des tells Terry that a mate of his (who thieves to order) tapes a set of keys behind the lights of every "ordered" car, in case "the punter refuses to pay up"...

I think that there are plenty of owners who aren't as paranoid as me, but this is part of the reason why I'll be selling mine once it's MOTd (though I hope I can enjoy a few drives of it before it goes). Bizzarely though I'm planing on replacing it with a TVR Chimaera which is of course a convertable, but I perceive it as being less likely to be pinched for some reason (rightly or wrongly), plus if they get in the garage I figure it won't matter if the car is a soft top or not if they're that determined.

You lot suffer from serious paranoia

Serious question then: If someone checked each and every note you gave them would you feel that they were being careful or a pain in the ****?

I think the other point is that as you say you're doing this every day, whereas the last time I sold a car was about 8 years ago, so I'm not so used to it. In that time the internet has become much more prevailant so some more unscrupulous types gain more information (and even learn from some horror stories I imagine). I'm not sure I'd be happy having maybe £10K in cash in my house as no doubt the bank would be closed when they pick the car up, but as you say some of use have serious paranoia.

Referring to flogging an RS 18 and "possibly" seeing 40+ K go missing, I'd have thought caution ought to be your watch word. If people manage without, then so be it. As there seems to be quite a few thieving foookers about and spotting dud money isn't what you want to be doing when flogging your motor, then I would have thought it is sensible to take a couple of precautions...

when purchasing my fiesta last year from trader, I had to send money to his business acount electronically, easy to do and can be checked by contacting bank.
like most say, veiwing from another address as I have been bitten in the past. I should think that most of the good cars do not need much advertising, When I bought my mex the owner was very sure to who he was selling the car and contacted the AVO owners club, kept me waiting for some time, but for such a special car I had no problem. Good luck, not all out there are on the make and there are many true enthusiasts so do not worry too much.

With the world wide web i can find out a lot about anyone in seconds ,inc your addy etc

Have you ever googled your own name

Its a bit different for me i suppose as people know im a business and easy to trace so they tend to trust me , I do understand your caution ,but giving your contact number on a for sale post allows folk to ring you and have a good chat and if you dont feel happy with that person they you dont deal with them

everything you do has risk , its all about what you do to make yourself happy

Having said that everyone seems happy to sell stuff on ebay and IMO this is the most damgerous way to sell anything
