As said, if your talking nigh on 50K, it's probably safer to use an auction house (a real one). It's a big, big risk to take with that sort of wedge.
As for cheques, do be serious; you can't take cheques, that's just insane . I'd be highly sceptical when it comes to cash as well, there's a lot of funny money about.
Anything above 500 quid and that's it for me, bank transfer with a counterfoil for the transaction. Preferrably the money being on the account a couple of days before collection.
I suppose one trick you could use, is to hide an old mobile with an active SIM in the car (would work like the old Tracker systems used to) only taking the phone out to charge it up. If the car's nicked, you could track the position of the phone.

If the person selling the car has access to the keys and the log book is in their name then they must be relatively trustworthy.

Originally posted by rwdrs View PostThese days, what with Google Earth, Facebook and the like, as long as somebody's got a contact number or an e-mail address surely it's got to be pretty easy to find out where someone lives and without even turning up to the appointment to view the car?

Not a bad idea anyway but I think I'll be getting a proper tracker installed, trouble is can I trust the tracker installer?
The mobile phone thing occurred to me the other day, it's a use for all those old handsets you accumulate over the years...
Might have somthing to do with watching an episode of Minder when Rose Mellor's Merc goes missing. Des tells Terry that a mate of his (who thieves to order) tapes a set of keys behind the lights of every "ordered" car, in case "the punter refuses to pay up"...

You lot suffer from serious paranoia
I think the other point is that as you say you're doing this every day, whereas the last time I sold a car was about 8 years ago, so I'm not so used to it. In that time the internet has become much more prevailant so some more unscrupulous types gain more information (and even learn from some horror stories I imagine). I'm not sure I'd be happy having maybe £10K in cash in my house as no doubt the bank would be closed when they pick the car up, but as you say some of use have serious paranoia.

Referring to flogging an RS 18 and "possibly" seeing 40+ K go missing, I'd have thought caution ought to be your watch word. If people manage without, then so be it. As there seems to be quite a few thieving foookers about and spotting dud money isn't what you want to be doing when flogging your motor, then I would have thought it is sensible to take a couple of precautions...

when purchasing my fiesta last year from trader, I had to send money to his business acount electronically, easy to do and can be checked by contacting bank.
like most say, veiwing from another address as I have been bitten in the past. I should think that most of the good cars do not need much advertising, When I bought my mex the owner was very sure to who he was selling the car and contacted the AVO owners club, kept me waiting for some time, but for such a special car I had no problem. Good luck, not all out there are on the make and there are many true enthusiasts so do not worry too much.

Have you ever googled your own name
Its a bit different for me i suppose as people know im a business and easy to trace so they tend to trust me , I do understand your caution ,but giving your contact number on a for sale post allows folk to ring you and have a good chat and if you dont feel happy with that person they you dont deal with them
everything you do has risk , its all about what you do to make yourself happy
Having said that everyone seems happy to sell stuff on ebay and IMO this is the most damgerous way to sell anything
