I was a member of Quinton Motor Club and competed mainly in mid/north wales, but did venture to the Cotwolds with a few to mind, rally 143, Hereford Evening News to name a few. Bengrys car auction was a favorite starting venue, and it's where the Quinton motor club started it's "Acropolis Rally 1985" event to which I was 1st in class B and 6th overall .
A few names come to mind, Dennis Quinn being one, he was still Road Rallying in his white RS2 when my younger brother wanted to try his hand at navigating in 1998. Another was Chris Weaver (nutter) with his red RS2, he use to do more Cotswold events and I remember him telling me he was flat out on one of the very long straights (Roman roads you know) when he took off over a yump and flew through the air, over a stone wall and ended up in a field .
Welsh events I can remember were the Snowliner, Radnor Pacemakers, Greenleaves, Beach car and truck Rental, JJ Brown, Holrus to name a few, but same here, all the paper work is with my navigator and I havn't seen or heard from him for decades.
          Rally 143. Now that's a rally I should remember, I won it in '84.
Flat out on a roman road with a big yump, has to be Condicote lane. He wouldn't do that now. Even 4x4 have difficulty getting along there.
I started a couple at Bengry's auction. Atlas plant in '80 and '81.
Picture in my siggy is from '81. I was joint leader with Theo Bengry up to about half way round then put it in a ditch and finished about 10th.
I also did the Acropolis in '82 but can't remember where it started. May have been Knighton way.

          Phil.

I think I done the Rally 143 in 84 and if I remember right it was really icy. I'm originally from Birmingham and now live in North West Wales (Llyn pennisula) and Road rallying is still big here in Wales.

We have 2 Road rallying events a year go past our house now so spectating is easy, but, and a big but, it's not a patch on the good old days. Sorry if your one of the young competitors, but the last one in November just didn't have anybody really pushing .

'84 it pi$$ed it down all night. I remember because I had the fanbelt break on the 1st selective and got soaked changing it on the relaxed section after.
Whats your name? I will look at the entry list to see if you are there.

I did this event in my avenger, my first rally car. The rally was stopped @ Corner Park garage, when plod announced that no rallies would ever run in this area again and to my knowledge they never have.

i will never forget plods words , i had just screamed to a halt at the back of a queue of cars, plod looks up from a car further down and marches up to us and raps on the window, i opened the window to the stern words "your rally is over son" i thought at that moment he was doing me i was almost glad it was stopped.

anyone remember (or got a copy) of the CCC magazine which shows plod following the rally and yumping a 1.3l police car in the lanes, think it was the gremlin or powys motor factors back in the 1980's, would be great to share it on here if someone has it.

still quite a few night events going on in and around the valleys chaps......
