No, they were on the public highway.

I was talking to someone who used to organise road rallies in the eighties and he told me it was not uncommon to set times which required averages in excess of 70 mph to clean. Understandably few cleans were posted even on the 'motorways' of the Cotswolds.
        Phil.
It wasn't my event that had 48 miles! As CofC of a Cotswold Road Race (err... I mean LCAMC Championship Rally) I did run one shortish section just south of the Cotswolds proper that had a real time schedule of 90mph (using up some spare Targa minutes). Several cleaned it...and the top entry were Mk1 RS2s of what would now be considered fairly minor tune with only one 911.

It's as well to consider the darker side of road rallying too.
I gave up organising after having a clipboard thrown at me across a motel room by a driver who ignored my advice in the final instructions that a lot, a lot, of unsurfaced roads were to be used (ie. "don't turn up on tarmac tyres"). Then my Secretary of the Meeting was offered a free holiday or a £50 bribe to fix the results (lose a minute penalty in a quiet zone) in favour of one of the very, very best known names in road rallying.
          No thanks...
The most worrying thing perhaps is that as soon as the bribe attempt had gone down in secret, another crew (who won) were immediately talking to me along the lines: "did you know that "x" stopped in the....section to remove a broken rear damper?"

Found these when in the loft

            1979 Road Rallying

            God I look young

Selectives were on public roads mainly on the roads classified as " whites "

Never the less these were basicly special stages in the dark and some were notorious car benders

                    road rally's

I also had it from one of the top teams in the "Motoring News " Championships that the "TopTeams" had the full route posted to them on the Wednesday of the weekend Rally.
So their routes mapped, and notes were made well before the rally started.
                    Never had that privelidge myself!!!

Ah the R. L. Brown Rally. I did this in 1977 in my Mk1 RS2000. Fantastic rally and bloody quick but alas no paperwork and can't remember where I finished. I haven't seen my navigator for that night for nearly 30 years so will probably never know. I do remember it was close to the wrong end of the results. Unless anyone on here can help me?
                        Phil.

I did the forerunner to this event when it was a road rally in about,I think,1977. Started at Hartford Motors in Banbury.
