just shows what a good club the avo club must be if people go to this length just to join
What if they are already an AVO member and as Ford encouraged they reshelled a MKI into a MKII will they still be able to be a FULL AVO member when renewing ?
At which point does the original car become something else ?
That's THE question!
Is it when the ID number on it is replaced/renewed? But then if an innerwing is replaced it will be another car ...
I've seen NUG before it was restored; is it the original car afterwards? Don't know.
I've seen EUW before it went to the UK; same question, same answer don't know.
Boreham reshelled so many cars in the 70's. Best to not think about it at all and drive the cars as Kevin does with VHK!
Done this loads of times on the AVO forum - I know some of you can't get on there, so I'll post it here too
DVLA state:
Vehicles that have been rebuilt using a mix of new or used parts
In order to retain the original registration mark:
cars and car-derived vans must use:
The original unmodified chassis or unaltered bodyshell (i.e. body and chassis as one unit - monocoque); or a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original supported by evidence from the dealer or manufacturer (e.g. receipt). And two other major components from the original vehicle - ie suspension (front & back); steering assembly; axles (both); transmission or engine. If a second-hand chassis or monocoque bodyshell is used a car must pass an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) and light goods vans must have a enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA) or single vehicle approval (SVA) test after which a "Q" prefix registration number will be allocated.
Allocating a vehicle registration mark
The vehicle must score eight or more points to retain the original registration mark. If less than eight points are scored or a second-hand or modified chassis or altered monocoque bodyshell is used an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA), enhanced single vehicle approval (ESVA), single vehicle approval (SVA) or motorcycle single vehicle approval (MSVA) certificate will be required to register the vehicle. A 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.
Scoring components
The following values will be allocated to the major components used:
chassis or body shell (body and chassis as one unit - monocoque ie direct replacement from the manufacturer) (original or new) = 5 points
suspension = 2 points
axles = 2 points
transmission = 2 points
steering assembly = 2 points
engine = 1 point
Where there is evidence that two vehicles have been welded together to form one (ie 'cut and shut') a 'Q' mark will be allocated, IVA, ESVA, SVA or MSVA will be required.
So, best that you keep your garage doors and your gobs tight shut - unless you fancy a nice Q plate on your Escort! (Even later than a V reg Mark!)
I make it that the above qualify for 8 points and so therefore easy to retain original registration
This must be how people are legally getting MKI's into MKII shells !
Dave you ickle monkey, you are picking the bits of my post you like the look of - you missed the important bit (like you didn't know!):

I'm guessing ALL the rally cars you show in your post were re-shelled prior to the clampdown by the DVLA a few years ago... Unless they had the brains to keep their garage doors shut and say they were done years ago!

OK I accept what you are saying so part 2 of my original request
Do The AVO grant Full membership based on ownership of MKI (AVO car) Escort reshelled into a MKII Escort ?
Dunno - it's never cropped up but my best guess is that the answer would be no, cos it's no longer an AVO car and no longer in the spirit of the marque.
I could quote club rules but there is no need - suffice to say, you've got us talking about it on the AVO forum (the closed bit that not even members can see ).
Eliteist devels aren't we?
I hope you never buy an AVO car and join the club Dave - you're a right royal pain in the arse!
