  • Bubble leaking

I think we were all surprised that Worthers didn't sell quickly or make more money on the open market and had to go to the Bay , is the price bubble leaking ?

How will this effect future valuations , top car struggles to reach 20k.

Mk1's seem to be flavour of the month again , a few nice cars have reached serious money recently.

Where does that leave the rest and what does Ians benchmark do to future valuations ?

Are Mexicos the next Northern Rock

i think it is a combination of colour and time of year (Christmas is not a good time to sell a car), if this car was lets say Red and it was selling in Mar/April it would have sold for a lot more me thinks

My own personal view on Worthers is as follows

Ian completed a 5+ year rebuild in 1 year

This was due to the fact he (in my opinion) paid 4,5,6 times too much for a number of items to finish the build.

If a bidders proxy "pot" is big enough then ANY item can be "won" on Thiefbay !

Moorelands bill also boosted the overall rebuild cost considerably.

Therefore in conclusion Ian ended up with a final bill of circa £40k (excluding fuel and his own labour costs collecting parts etc etc)

This though does NOT make Worthers a £40k MKII RS Escort !

I feel that Worthers is a car with a value between £14k and £18k

The above valuation is no inference to how Worthers looks and to how it is finished as it is an extremely good example of what was a mass produced Ford car. My valuation is simply my opinion based on how I judge the current MKII RS market in general.

Remember though if a buyer "wants" a car more than the next buyer and is prepared to pay more then they will inevitably own that car at whatever cost they are prepared to pay.

In Concours competitons I felt the car was "mis-classed" and due to the level of detail on its rebuild Ian lost his direction and should have continued down the path of Standard and not dabbled in Modified.

With Worthers having an unclear status (standard/modified modified/standard etc etc) in Concours it was never going to be the winner it deserved to be.

On the open market I felt the car achieved a value maybe a touch higher than it deserved but hopefully the new owner will remove ALL modifed items and turn Worthers into a Worthy Standard Class winning car.

The new owner will not (again in my opinion) be able to sell the car for what they have paid for it for a long time until the rest of the market catches up.

                Ahhhhhh

                Hi,

Maybe the car did not go for what he put into it but what about the parts. I think they made a hell of a lot.

20,000 is a lot of money for a old escort. What price is a good driver worth now but I guess it would be a lot less than 20,000 and also more fun as you could actually drive it which is what they were made to do.

I hate to be boring, but surely even a mint MkII still doesn't have the rarity of the Mk1 and TBH if Worthers can't be worth more than YFX, and that is a beaut.
I could personally never justify spending 40K+ on a MkII, I'm sorry if the bloke has lost out, but as I said, it was his obsession, fine, if that what he wants to do I suppose it was cheaper than a year of motorsport, but then moaning about not getting the half of the money back on the project isn't on.

Ian will just have to write that money off as his "pleasure", if you can afford to chuck that much money at a car then fine, it's like gambling, if you can't afford to loose the money don't put it down as a stake.

There are too many looking at the scene as a way of making a "quick buck" which has ruined it, the prices will drop again, slowly, but the prices of the cars and the bits have gone bananas and IMO the right price for a mint MkII RS is 5-6 K all this talk of 15-20 K for an Escort are ridiculous IMO, as long as people feeel they must pay these figures it'll last, but I remeber a time at the end of the 80's when old E-Types were fetching over 100 K, then overnight were only worth about 30, all lot of people looked very sad very quickly

                  Rant over

some very valid points dave, the standard/modified issues were discussed many times, ian tried his best to rectify two of them, and done so to the best of his ability, i would like to of seen a standard exhaust and shockers tbh with all the hard parts maybe these were ians hardest i dont know, remember ian done the car how he wanted to. The colour well thats just one of those things, the interior is stunning.
back to the value its was worth £19000 yesterday, today 15 to 18 imo

Ian please dont take this the wrong way weve spoken many times about the car

                      cheers dave

£20k to do it "how he wanted to"

I would have no Misses or no plums left (maybe I could buy a black all in one jump suit and go drinking in Barnsley as well !) and have to sleep down my unit if I lost £20k

thing is though Dave, he moaned about paying 300 sheets for a dipstick tube and still paid it, and had wheel nuts chromed etc, while people can do what they want, you deffo can't do IMO outrageous stuff like that, fire up the prices on thiefbay and then moan "I've been done up like a kipper guv",

I don't think there's many on here that would chuck that sort of money at a car (not an Escort anyway), let alone say after the event that they feel hard done by for loosing 20 K.

I should have held out a bit longer at the start of the year and waited to get a Rs2000 which is what I really wanted. But even then with a 7-8k max budget there wasnt anything about that didnt need work.
Now at the prices things are I prob get a matchbox or corgi.
