  • Mk2 Escort stood since 1993

Here is my latest project, its been stood a fair few years and has a fair share of tin rot, it will have bits done as and when i get the time , on the O/S the floor has rotted away from the inner sill, which has also rotted away from the outer sill, the A post is practically hanging freely, the seat cross member is U/S and the chassis needs attention. It is also rotten under the pedals so that will need attention as well

This is how it looks at present

and with inner sill and front floor plate laid in position

If you want it, get it, before someone else beats you to it.

Its Cold Zinc Galv spray, I usually use Galvafroid but havent got any at the minute, and it always seems to shoot up in price everytime I want to get some

I should have been doing some bricklaying at home this aft but the rain stopped that, but not to worry I dragged myself reluctantly into the garage and decided to take a closer look at the O/S door that has one big open gap across the bottom. Hope you like my remedy.

          Plenty of rot I thought

But it cleaned up pretty well considering how it looked, and the bottom of the door is in quite good condition bar for the lip.

One can soon see the big problem, no lip for the door skin to attach too

So, I made some strips up to weld onto what was left, the unwelded bit at the end will form part of the return for the front edge of the door when i get round to making that

A few tacks to hold it in place, not the best, but it did the trick

Dressed up a little until I get time to complete the lip at either end and then it will be time to make a new outer skin for it

This is as far as I got today, just need to make another small strip to finish off the bottom, and then see what the rest is like

                Cheers Dave,
Its deffo a proper basket case mate, been stood many years (19) happily rotting away, the rest of the door frame is surprisingly quite good, pretty solid around the actual hinges and no rot or splits around the door catch or at the front of the qtr window where they normally come apart, but the present skin has not been fitted correctly, you can probably see that on pic 3 between the hinges, looks like it was wrapped on with pliers, and deffo not had any paint between the layers so deffo recipe for disaster. Seen some doors no better than these and they want silly money for them, so decided to give it a try, if it doesnt work, then i will have to bite the bullet and get some, but i will deffo give it a try first .
Your right about the zinc paint as well, the one i use has aluminium flake in it, apparently it helps it bond and give excellent corrosion resistance.

Still couldnt get any bricklaying done again today, so back into the garage to do a bit more on the door, and this is the hole I am sorting out

I made this plate up that took me a while to get to a shape I was happy with

I made the plate to retain the recessed hinge effect, so when finished it will hopefully look as if it hasnt been done

A bit of galv paint to protect it until I do the next bit

Another after pic, you can see the square bit around the hinge now, This is how it should look lol. Next job is to take what looks like 2 hinge pins out so I can access the rot behind it

nothing wrong with that wee repair m8.
a just use thin cardborad to make templates then draw round what shape a need on metal and go from there works for me.

                              hi m8
i have had 2 or 3 parts from them.thu a customer to fix his car.
a would say they are fine as they buy panels in and sell them back out.
                              so shouldnt be a problem.
just make sure they send u the right part.
                              cheers
