Well, during the last week I managed to get the axle casing looking like this:

So this weekend I decided to take the time off. Went to the seaside yesterday:

and walked around the village aimlessly today with the digicam before tuning in to watch Silverstone on the box.

Tomorrow it's back to the grindstone - this is on my way to work now that we've just shifted offices:

Back to the grindstone, now (literally). I managed to get the brake back plates back to bare metal and 2-packed them. The primer bit is where they but up to the rear axle flange so as not to have too much paint build up there. I'd got more or less 'like new' lower plates ready to go and then found out that they had different hole spacing to the originals (probably from a different axle?). So the sand blasting cabinet had to be brought out of retirement to refurbish the originals - fortunately no snapped of studs etc.

Axle case is smooth hammerite dark blue. Has anyone ever noticed that it says on the Hammerite tins "not for use in automotive applications"? Thought that would be their major user!

Single leafs are Ford original tuning bits. Took ages to source replacement bushes but it seems that Mick from R.A.C.E. has sorted me out now (depending on what arrives in the post!). Don't know how long the paint will stay on, but I tried to put on only a very thin coat of 2-pack so that it can flex without chipping. I'm just here wrapping them up to avoid too much damage when I'm storing/fitting them.

After 13 years, 4 houses, two countries bla, bla, bla... the first piece went on to the car today which is going to stay! Not much, I admit, but it's a start.

I'd made notes and taken pictures which way round the buffer goes and it's definitely on the right way according to Henry Ford, but all the dimensions are crying out for it to go on the other way round and I've seen a few restos with it on with the flange lip showing rearwards. Oh well, if that's gonna be the only problem putting it back together I'll be ok I guess

Thanks for the encouragement, guys! It helps. As I've no trouble-and-strife to go "ooohhh" and "aaahhh", the girlfriend doesn't know a contact breaker from a coffee maker, and the french neighbours drive 30 year old corrugated outside toilets on wheels and don't know what's so special about restoring a modern Escort Mk2, your words make me feel less of a complete eccentric nut!
