Yeah, very interesting thread. As many have already said, hats off to yer...

It will take a hell of a lot of patience to see this one through.
I must admit though, I never thought of a Ford/BMW combo, different.

Doing the one with the Sierra Cosworth floorpan would have been the more traditional route.
A rolled ST170 or similar would be niteresting. Turbocharge the ST engine, taking it up to 300 bhp, now that would be a project
Nevertheless, this is a great thread, keep up the good work

A lot of people have told me the BM is a crap base, and that I should have used a sierra, but then, when I got the sierra floor pan and shortened it to suit, a lot of people said I was mad cause the Sierra was a crap base, saying the front suspension was ok with a lot of dosh thrown at it, but the rear was terrible, and heavy. Seams the way to go is Impreza, but Impreza's in my eyes, when a mk1 is put on top, and you open the bonnet, they look Shi'ite.

yes that front pulley is 10mm from the front panel

and yes that is the exhaust the front panel has been cut to clear.

Unlike a 23 year old Sierra, with the BM I've got disks all round, ABS, even traction control, and all for £175. As soon as I worked out how cheap it would be to upgrade a BM, Ford went way out the window

I hope you don't think I suggested the Beamer was a crap basis for the project, just a little, well as I said, different.

As regards the TC, do you need it unless you've upwards of 150 bhp?
Agreed the Cossie brakes aren't up to modern ones, but the Escort Cosworth is basically a shortened Sierra floorpan, so it can't be that bad. The rear diff for example does not add to the unsprung weight, I know the radius arms aren't exacty lightweight, but there.

175 sheets for the base though is incredibly cheap. As said, the MkI Focus is a good base IMO, lightweigt suspension, good brakes and good handling out of the box.

But I'm sure people are truly interested to see how the BMW Escort turns out.

currently sitting on 139bhp, but the eventual 530i manual is pushing 310bhp in standard form, so yup, TC is a nice free bonus, and can always be switched off

Cossie ones might be, but sierra ones aint, as i said, sierra floorpan is fine if you then basicly wanna spend a fortune making it right.

does sticking a whal tail on the back of a 1600L make it a cosworth, or does it basicly just look the same?

yup, just like the BM, only an E30 lsd is like £50, a sierra one (not granada or scorpio) is like twice that.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but aint a focus FWD?....and hence defeating the purpose of the object?, if I were going FWD I'd get me a calibra turbo

bit more work done to the front, a new way of mounting, still have to seam it up, but it all sits flush.

decided to go with welded nuts rather than self tappers this time

lol, it would make an interesting rally car now eh? first tree, total loss

Been looking into other uses, might be fun as a track day car.....BMW meets of course, wouldnt want to upset the ford guys
