Got offered this the beginning of last week at £3k, nice project but the fella was a nightmare to deal with so blew it out. Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing
It will be rotten when you get the screwdriver out but then they all are . . What's the plans for it then , standard or fast ?
Thanks for all the comments chaps. I'll definitely keep you posted.
It will be restored to original spec keeping as many opriginal features as possible. That includes the supplying dealer sticker in the back window and it may even be possible to keep the original carpets (they look good at first inspection and judging by the floor, the car's been pretty dry.
There will be some discreet period mods.
Wheels will be restored as will the original seats but for historic regularity road rallies it will wear Minilites and there will be Contour Clubmans to sit in. No harnesses or cage needed so standard interior. 185/70 series tyres but I'll build the engine to produce as much power as poss without sacrificing torque. So fast road spec on twin-40s, usual balancing etc and cam timed in. Thinking this should give me a useable 125bhp at 1600cc (1700 busts the class). Possibly a Panhard rod (I reckon they handle and steer so much better without the axle twanging around) and some Quaife halfshafts and definitely a LSD. Otherwise suspension will be fairly standard for the right look. Competition front pads may be all I need on the brakes and a 7/8th master cylinder if I can find one to bring the brake pedal up (not sure whether these later cars were still on 3/4") Anybody? That's the plan. The original orange is also being retained.
First job is to list missing bits and strip for soda blasting so the dog can see the rabbit...
lol , sounds like a great modified motor being built . can't wait too see it finished as it will be ace .
sigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .
Tick tock goes the clock and the clock don't lie .
12.4sec to 109mph With NO turbo , NO gay trailer , NO slicks , NO gas , NO race fuel and NO bits missing . Beat that !!!!
I wouldn't recommend dipping (your first posting said dip or blast), it's given me a fair bit of trouble rectifying damage done by clumsy gits, and lack of cleanliness
Nice looking project though , have fun

Thanks very much for the advice. I've heard a few comments like this and am going for soda blasting. All set for two to three weeks time.

Been dismantling this week. Still looking good with a great floor and a little rust around the boot seal lip. Also found some small filler repairs inside the A pillars where they back on to the inner wings but nothing serious.
This came off with lighter fuel
bit of stitching needed here
Nice wipers, will add rubber bits from modern black ones, keeping chrome
Rear with everything out
Nothing nasty here either
Bit concerned about the tyre wear. Tracking may be out...
Now stripped and ready to go for plastic media cleaning in Sussex. Had planned to go today but discovered the local trailer hire firm now doesn't! All set for Wednesday tho'.
Engine's gone
What's lurking under these sill repairs?
That's what. It'll get done properly once cleaned
Plastic media blasters will leave all sound deadening while removing paint from it.
Proper chicken shed engine covered in chicken, er... product. All set to be turned into a 1700cc beast on twin 45s. The original head will be kept standard and stored.
