If I had invested the same amount of money as I paided for my Mex at the same time....

The Mex has given by far the best return, both as a fun car, and latterly financial ...if I had put the money in the bank or some financial scheme ...some one else makes the big bucks, doesn't pay tax and then invests it somewhere else.then claims a massive bonus and I get to see peanuts really ....the Mex is in the garage, I can get it all out on a whim go for a drive enjoy it then put it away. Better than money .......it's fun

A car sitting in your garage can't pay your bills, won't bail your morgtage out, buy your shopping or feed your kids, only money from your bank can do that.

Money in the bank will pay you an interest if invested properly and that is a given, finding a buyer when you need to cash your Escort in isn't .

It just isn't better than money in the bank, ask anyone who's just sold their Escort for a large lump of cash, which feels better ?

      Son
I respect your opinion but disagree. I classify 'money in the bank' as money invested in a bank, not day to day money used for buying food, paying bills etc.
Current interest rates are very poor and for me there's no competition between having lets say 20k in the bank earning next door to nothing and 20k sat in my garage, where just seeing makes me smile and driving it makes me very very happy. Looking at my savings account statement definately can't do that. It can only make me swear! And i get to keep all the money from any sale without any 'muppets' taking a cut! For me there's no contest.

The problem is with banking on a car is that you will never know quite what your return will be until you actually sell.

The other thing that people conveniently forget when banging on about the high return from a car is the restoration costs and running costs.
How many people have actually calculated every single penny that they have spent on their car?

        I haven't...I daren't!!

and surely that must form part of your calculation..

A polite reply on this forum

I respect your opinion also, the world would be a boring place if we all thought along the same lines.

I'm off to polish my ISA book ...

Classic cars are like Stocks and Shares

The value of your investment may go up but also may be worth less than the money initially invested

If you look at it purely as an Investment then it takes away from the enjoyment. I don't smoke so see the £50 a week saved as my hobby money. So if my cars cost me £2500 a year then that is just my fag money and the biggest benefit are my lungs
            Cheers

This, this with bells on !

when I purchased my black car I done over 2000 miles for this very reason, I spoke to people that sounded like they knew what they were talking about before any trip was planned as well and then was still dissapointed with the car when I got there

believe me a lot of cars get sold without the internet just word of mouth and theres been some very strong prices made and the good ones are going up but it doesnt make every shiny "Mexico" worth the same !!!

if you are looking now and you dont know these cars you can get very burnt

Another very valid reason why the selling of V5s needs to be stamped out

A car could be the best you have ever seen to an unsuspecting buyer but that Mex may have just started life as an 1100 pop and been given a dodgy V5

Even worse it could have ben stolen and given a new ID again with a dodgy V5

A lot of people take the P regarding this practice but I wonder how they would feel if there car was not something they thought it was

Steady up, where's the usual slagging match.

I bought my RS only 3 years ago at what I believe was a very fair price, I use it on a good few tours each year and try and keep it as good, or better than it was when I got it. I didn't buy it as an investment so I don't give a monkeys what it's worth, as long as it doesn't get written off or nicked and I lose out.
