The demand out weighs the supply thats why its still tipping towards a sellars market, But for how long...... considering i paid £1800 form mine the last time nobody wanted them and i got called mad by all the others in the Hamshire RSOC for buying it as even the main club didnt want to know the older stuff in the mid late 90s so it will have to fall out of favour a bit before its as worth less again. Just wish i bought the yellow and Midnight blue ones i looked at as well and stored them...Now wheres my Delorian

Escorts prices have shot up in comparison with some other classics.
My Mk1 RS2000 was £1,900, worth much more now!

On the other hand a new Ford Focus can cost 18,500 & be virtually worthless a few years down the road.

There is a reason mint Vauxhaull Viva's are still cheap.... they are crap!

had a lot nof fun in a viva when i was 18, not so sure as the fun would still be there today, blame part of that on the sooo busy roads of today, and the dam speed cameras, but was a good car from memory, in fact far more reliable than the ford at the time

the difference today, a mk1 escort you can virtually still buy anything for, in one way shape or form, but i bet a viva youd struggle to maintain if it were much more than a show piece, hence the price differences

Bought not biult and most are none rs cars with all the bits added, and a new log book, I would like a genuine rs but looks like never going to happen with these prices and how sure are you that it's what the label says, buy a mk1granada instead plenty for your money same thrills, just need to keep it away from the banger boys but then look how many crooks are after escorts anyway,

Bit unfair to compare a Viva against an RS, perhaps you need to compare with a Viva GT or a 2300 Firenza droopsnoot which in my opinion were both great cars! I had a 67 Viva SL90 (Jack Brabham converted a few, called the Brabham Viva) and it was a great and very attractive car! The engine was only 1159cc but was lively for it's size, and the gearbox with it's short gearlever was very positive. Better looking than any Ford when it was introduced. Fords even copied the ***e bottle design of the Viva when the Mk1 Escort was introduced in 1968.

I only know of two cars that have genuinely sold for more than £20k recently, yes some very special cars will sell behind closed doors.

There are many Escorts advertised at £20k plus, there are many of them static on the market.

We've seen them all reappear on EBay over and over again, change hands through dealers and still not sell, change countries and still not sell.

The White x-pack with numbers on the side, 5 times on EBay, made less every time and now it's for sale again.

The White RS2000 space frame thing on EBay, must've been for sale over two years and has dropped £20k in price, it is an oddball though.

There's the red Mexico at a dealers in Cheshire I think, still for sale at £20k.

The orange 'RS2000' on EBay and Postonheads, £27,500 ...no takers

Martins former Signal green beauty is still for sale I think.

KGF seems to buy a few or take them on a sale or return.

In my opinion, and that's all it is, there are a finite number of people with £20k plus to spend that want an Escort as an ornament, when they have all bought the market can only go one way, history of the classic car price hikes tells us that the bubble always bursts.

It amazes me when I still see monthly car mags saying buy an Escort as an investment, I think they are a few years behind the times, you don't buy at the height of the market as an investor.

I think the cars that sell are the decent , useable, sub £12k cars, ones that can be taken out and enjoyed.

The lads who've owned them for years didn't buy as an investment and I think it's great that their love of the RS marque has turned into a good investment over time, the ones buying recently just may get their fingers burnt.

I still like the old Escorts as much as the next man but put £20k in my hand and I'm sorry but I just don't see that value in them, perhaps I'm tainted from the memory of going out with £4k in my back pocket and having the pick of the best Escorts in the country...or perhaps it's because I've stepped away and tried other things and realised £20k or even half of that can buy you a whole lot more.

On a similar note, and may amuse some ..

With the recent price hikes in the air cooled 911 market certain owners within the Porsche club were requesting monthly valuations and amending their agreed insurance policies to show the price increase, a club official then asked them if they would require the same service when the market turned .....strangely they all went very quiet.

It amused me and I think it shows that most people do not like to accept their cars can/will go the other way as well.

I think we're all a bit obsessed with prices on these cars now and it takes all the enjoyment out of owning them. I still have my first road going 2door mk2 escort, bought for £200 when I was 16 and stripped and built from scratch within 6 months in a tiny garage with no floor and hardly any equipment. I drove that car every day until I was 21 in all weathers and enjoyed every sideways moment of it. Fast forward 24 years and my classic ford collection has grown considerably (4 mk1 escorts, 2 mk2's, 2mk2 granadas, a 3 door cossie and an escort cossie) and now I only take them out on nice days in spring and summer (dreaded salty roads, mustn't put too many miles on the escos in case it devalues it etc.) and I can honestly say that I've never had as much fun in any of my high priced garage queens as I had in my first escort.....

I couldn't be happier....we built the escort like the ones i saw and dream't of as i kid..........i get to drive it like i stole it when i'm in the mood..........and, providing i can keep it the same shape as it's meant to be.......it will maintain or even increase in value (not that i ever intend to sell it).
Also got a Mk1 in bits sat in a container which is literally better then money in the bank (again will hopefully never be for sale).....what's not to be happy about!
The only people i fell sympathy for are the genuine hard working folk who dream of owning a classic car but can't afford it.
Please please please can I be in the 'Clique'

I hate the saying 'better than money in the bank'

A car sitting in your garage can't pay your bills, won't bail your morgtage out, buy your shopping or feed your kids, only money from your bank can do that.

Money in the bank will pay you an interest if invested properly and that is a given, finding a buyer when you need to cash your Escort in isn't .

It just isn't better than money in the bank, ask anyone who's just sold their Escort for a large lump of cash, which feels better ?

I would say that 80% of people can't tell the difference between a proper car and a polished up turd and that's what confuses the prices....

There can be no more dangerous scene for a newcomer to join than rwd Escorts..even the trade don't know what they are buying most times,so you don't really get the security with a trade purchase.

I personally think that someone looking to buy an Escort would best off to buy a SA sport. They are generally very solid and if you can buy one fresh from import it wont be pretending to be something it isn't.
