I've seen one RS2 back in 1985 with a steel electric sunroof and it was a genuine Series X with loads of the right bits added (but no arches). I very nearly bought it and now I wish I had as I still have the one that I bought instead and a genuine Series X would be nice.
Not much chance of it having come from the factory with that sun roof, as they were not offered as an option in any way, but anything is possible once the car has been delivered to the customer, it depends on how determined the owner was to get one fitted! I thought all series X's had the arches fitted though, or was it a general name for a list of mods that Ford offered? I would have to check my brochure.

Tim
Series X was as you say general name for a list of mods that Ford offered, options ranging from LSD, Bilstein suspension, World Cup crossmember etc etc to the arches and not just for the Escort either.
This car that I looked and eventually owned by two people that I know was very high spec but no arches.

Ahhh I had an idea that might be right, thanks for confirming that!
I think i'd rather have a Webasto than X-pack arches !!! ha ha
sigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .
Tick tock goes the clock and the clock don't lie .
12.4sec to 109mph With NO turbo , NO gay trailer , NO slicks , NO gas , NO race fuel and NO bits missing . Beat that !!!!
Just to bring a different opinion to the debate, if your car was fitted from new by the dealer with an electric sliding sunroof , would you still feel it devalued the car and still want to remove it? This is the case with my car, admittedly its not an Escort it's a Sunbeam Lotus but the same applies as its from the same era and type of car. In fact its added to the value as it was one of only a small handful done right at the end to get rid of them. In a way this is probably the main reason why the car has survived due to its rarity.
My old RS2000 ADR 520W had a glass roof fitted as well and as I was the second owner at 3 years old , I presume was done at the dealer or when virtually new . I never liked it and changed it for a slightly different one but now it sports a full length Webasto.
Forgot to mention also, that an Avon Sunbeam Lotus came fitted as standard with an aftermarket Britax glass sunroof . An Avon without the roof is less desirable and is worth less ( even though it looks better!).
Its the Marmite thing - just like Flat front or Coned Mk2 RS2000's! Personally i've had a Full Webasto in my '68 Cooper S, an aftermarket Glass tilt or remove in a MG Metro Turbo and a Factory Sliding Glass in a 205 GTI 1.9. And everyone had benefits except the 205 which rattled like hell open or closed! I've never rolled a car although i've smacked a few, so roof strength in a road car is a dubious arguement IMO but if you rate your driving low enough that a sunroof worries you then get a roll cage!
Query - how do the haters feel about jumping in a soft top MG GTB or TR6 and ragging one of them around?
