So is replacing worn out or leaky microwave door with tilt slide sunroof with its strengthening and drain tubes an option then ? If it works great you have the benefits of a sunroof and if doesn't a new roofskin was needed anyway

I've seen a couple of RS2000's with wind back steel sunroofs in, they always had vinyl roof as well , very similar to MK4 Cortina sunroof. There was an RS abandoned next to a bungalow not far from me, few years ago and it had a wind back roof in, if its still there it will be proper rotten now as it was 50 yards from the beach.

I think if you bought a car and it had a shit glass sunroof in, before doing a skin swap there'd be no harm in trying to fit a wind back from another Ford model first, Cortina or Granada ?

If it doesn't work or looks shit then swap the skin.

lucky my rs doesn't have one, I've a mk1 fiesta and I might be taking the tin opener to it to transfer a ford roof over from another shell

It was an aftermarket one alright.
You can tell as the car started off without a sunroof (series 2) then it was cut in.

I know it wasn't originally in the car, by aftermarket I meant just a generic sunroof, not retro fitted from another Ford.

I think the South African ones may have been if not a factory option then a dealer fit option as I have seen pictures of 3 or 4 with the same sunroof that was fitted to mine previously, and the 2nd owner who had had it since it was about 4 years old thought it had been in it since it was new.
These sunroofs were quite like the Peugeot sliding ones fitted to 205s, they slide along rails in the roof.

Don't know about SA escorts but European Escorts were never offered with a sunroof, either from the factory or as an accessory (it'd be interesting to see if a sunroof was listed on a Ford SA microfiche but I doubt it). A steel sunroof, from a Cortina or Capri would've been a nice addition but never done by Ford AFAIK. It's like a lot of things added in the 80s, people think this stuff is "period" (like white batteries) but it's not.

It would be interesting, its maybe just a coincidence that they had the same type, but it is quite unusual, and not very attractive.

Mine has a glass one in it, found out it was fitted by the 2nd owner in 1983, before I found out that bit of info I had already bought a roof skin which is still sitting in my garage waiting to get rid of the sunroof, problem I now have is do I reskin the roof or leave the mike in it seeing as its been there for the past 30 years and is a part of the cars history ??
