Don't mind them but if I had the option I would prefer not to have one

Exactly! The point is that 30 years ago many of you were not even thought of, so you would not understand anything about sun roofs fitted in Ford Escorts would you?

The fact is that in those days, unless you bought a Triumph Herald, Spitfire, or MG roadster, you had no chance of the fresh air blowing in and around you, and not everyone would want to buy one of those would they? So a nice saloon car of your choice fitted with a sunroof was an attractive and fun alternative. My second Mk1 Sport was fitted with a Weathershield sunroof which was one of the most popular sun roofs fitted in cars at that time. It was made from vinyl and was great fun. I loved it and I even used it during the winter, with the heater full on! Later when the Mk2 Escorts were introduced a combination of vinyl roof and vinyl sun roof was an attractive and popular choice, as the sunroof blended nicely into the roof.

Lateron metal sunroofs began to be fitted as standard or an option on cars, and around that time someone thought of producing a very cheap, and in my opinion a naff looking removable glass sunroof that became very popular with motor traders who fitted them to make cars more attractive to sell! If a car did not sell and was stuck in the showroom, then a cheap glass sunroof might just shift it! The manufacturers did bring out their own glass sunroofs too, but or course they got the job done properly and got the thing looking right!

The only problem ever considered with a sunroof was that if the car was going to be used for rallying, then it would have adverse affects on the strenghth of the bodyshell, so the rally boys often avoided them. So unless you are going to rally the car, then what is the problem?

At the end of the day it is what we like on our cars that count, and it's not down to the opinion of others who criticise them with some level of aggression, just because they don't like something that's out there!

They often leaked and buffeted when open and when you droove properly, not parading around like the bufty boys!

Not my experience I'm afraid. When fitted and set up properly then they were fine. The Weathershield was fitted with a hinged visor which eliminated all buffeting, the cheap glass alternatives did not feature this and so buffeted like hell, as I say they were cheap!

I can only say that due to age and deteriation of the vinyl, then you will get problems. If your talking about a 30 year old one, then like anything else perishable, then you will eventually get problems!

Pno has a South African sunroof fitted if memory serves me right. It has a winding handle etc, this made it easier to film through it due to the bigger size
