Sunroofs suck but still buy a car with one if you like it . Just get a new roof skin fitted as not that expensive if you use one from a scrap car . Job done .

along with audioline graphic equalizers,louvred window grills and mudflaps they have no place on an Escort.

i have a sunroof in mine a britax one, problem free never leaks and i think they look ok everybody has there own opinion on them, as long as there fitted properly i donnt see what the problem is ,isnt the escort all about building one up to how you (THE OWNER) wants to have them ,would be hellish boring if they were all exactly the same

What you've got to remember is it was the in thing 30 years ago to have sun roofs you wouldn't do it today, but hey you can't turn the clock back

They are Marmite. A webasto can also weaken the shell if not strengthened in the right places. Ches knows this

You cannot strengthen a Mk 2 shell enough to withstand a Webasto. The Mk 2 shell is inherently weak and a good deal weaker than a Mk 1 with those spindly pillars on a Mk 2. And then cutting 3/4 of the roof panel away is not going to do the shell rigidity any good at all.

As for a Webasto, I had a Mk 2 with one and the bloody wind noise was awful and it detracted from the look of the car. If you cut a Webasto into a sunroof-less car you'd be barmy. There is only a small minority that actually like them and selling a Mk2 with one in is considerably harder than without.

The argument about it being 'period' can be discounted, as already said, you wouldn't put old PN36s on your road car just because they were original fitment, no, you'd fit the newest Pirellis or Yokos etc...

My old mk2 rs2000 with a webasto was strengthened around the frame. Was good enough for the integrity of the shell so no cracking. The one on my old mk1 was awful. It cracked from each corner as had no strengthening. Just shows they can hold if correctly installed.

Well my 1st car in 1986 was a mk2 and I've always owned at least one ever since But never had a sunroof (of any type) and that was by choice after having a rally inspired history where sunroofs were a no no and just another job to get rid of
But a few years back a Rs2 turned up that ticked all the right boxes for me ,rare colour that I hadn't owned,nice modern engine and near mint But yep you guessed it it had a microwave door In the roof .
So deal was done and one of the 1st things I did was buy a s/h roof and planned to fit it over winter! Well 3 years later I still hadn't swopped it and the main reason was it was quite nice on a rare sunny day!!
Moral of the story is don't knock it unless you've tried it?
But when all said and done if there was two cars with exact same spec except the sunroof ! you know which one I'm going to pick

I think if you buy one with a sunroof then that is part of its history, I agree you would not fit one now to a none sun roof car. But we like to put our own Mark on our cars, eg wheels graphics number plates, even interior mods. Each car is an individual now especially after all these years.
