Don't forget to apply the lashings of Hammerite to achieve the proper Replica Look though

Before I go on I will tell you my story

I was an apprentice at a Ford dealer in the early to late 80's. In that time I owned countless Escorts, mostly MK2's. And as money allowed I worked myself onto the sports, ghia's and then RS2000's.

I was Escort nuts and several RS2000s later I finally sold my last, a white 1980 custom. At that point i was growing up a bit and the FWD Fords just didnt cut it for me, so I have had a break since around 1991

Now in all of that time I WANTED an RS1800 but could never afford one, plus you never used to see them come up for sale (pre internet days), so it never happened

Over the last 20 years I have still owned various "toys" and to this day work in the trade restoring, doing custom fabrication work & engine conversions on all sorts (mainly VW's).

So a couple of years ago I stumbled on a 1978 2dr GL which is largely solid aprt from the top mounts and rear arches (nothing new there then)!

The idea was to build myself a RS1800 replica, visually butwith a more modern engine, and so have been collecting genuine RS18/Mex parts ready for when I start the build. i now have sourced most parts including a polyurethane front spoiler, FORD grill, 1/4 Bumpers, white dial clocks, rubberised boot spoiler, FORD bootlid, Scheels etc etc....

But now that im getting near to actually getting my teeth into it and wanting the RS1800 from a young age, I am now having second thoughts on what to do

So im putting it up here to see what others think, do I carry on with my original intention or do I do something different (if that is possible)???

PS. Sorry for the long post

                  Car in question
good post, looks like you've got a good car to start with, and you have the know how on doing the work as these projects tend to eat up the money, so much so that you probably could buy a real RS,

as pictured in the thread theres some good RS1800 lookalikes about, some serious kit, and you can do what you want spec wise

good luck with what you do.

Blimey, I wasn't expecting such a large response to this post

To be honest, I expected the opinions to be the exact oppersite to what most have said

I guess if I don't do it I will always regret not doing it, so will stick with the original plan

I realise for what this is going to cost me I could go out and buy a nice RS2. but I have had plenty of those in the past in std form, X-packed & modified. My plan with the replica would be to get the exterior and interior as it should be, but with modern running gear so I can actually use it

I think my doubts come from seeing that RS1800 that was stolen recently put me off, but im sure it will be a target to thieves regardless

Don't worry I will take plenty of pics along the way and start a build thread. Im still collecting parts at the mo, as I like to get most of the parts in place before I rip into the vehicle so it doesn't become a long term project in the workshop.

Hopefully I will be able to start it in December, once I have the remaining parts and get another project finished and off of the rotisserie

                            Cheers

                            Al

I agree with In the Pit, I'd restore it standard colour/interior and chuck a nice motor in there, maybe lower it on deep dish/banded steels.
It'd stand out more than any rs rep, but I do like a the look of rs1800's.
