hAD THIS CONVERSATION WITH jULIAN sPENCE RECENTLY.
intend to keep an escort for as long as possible as quite honestly no other car does it for me like a mk2. I class myself as an enthuriast not someone in it for the money. LAR is everything I ever wanted in a car and bought it after my grandad died and left me some dollar. Every time I look at it it reminds me of him and its what I always promised myself if i ever had the dosh. Hell will freeze over before I sell that car.
100% Genuine love mk1 & mk2 escorts had both over the years,The money in these cars now has wasted it a bit because it would cost so much to replace , crash , theft ,etc hence people keep them locked away , sad but true

Still love MK2's but the price of the cars has made the attendance at shows diminish as people no longer take them out.
The late 80's into the 90's was great as you had to go to a show to meet up with people as there was no Internet or Forums.
You bought cars and parts in Motoring News or at Shows as eBay didn't exist and there was much more camaraderie and a willingness to give parts or sell at reasonable prices as the cars were worth very little.
The Lakes tour has been affected by the weather in recent years but it has also become a victim of it's own success. In 2007 and 2008 I knew probably 85% of the people that were there. In 2010 about 50% and last year I was lucky if I new 30% of the people as a lot of the 'old timers' were no longer there
Money has changed things and it will only get worse as fewer parts are available and the cost of keeping them on the road will keep climbing. Those holding them as investments are keeping them stored away to protect them but the big question is.... WHERE ARE THE NEXT GENERATION OF MK2 ESCORT OWNERS COMING FROM?? Very few kids are interested in cars now due to Insurance costs and the price of older cars as they can by a 1.2 Corsa much cheaper and spend their cash on designer clothes and iPhones
Another reason for me getting the escort cosworth was because of increasing prices , I remember not to long ago you could get a good escos for 10k
The escos was a car I always promised myself but was always out of reach , and if it wasn't for the increases in mk2 prices I would never have been able to afford one
The mk2 was a car I never owned in my younger years (mk1 fiestas was my thing) so thought I would try the mk2 escort , had it ten years , but I think deep down I always wanted another cossie
Whatever happens to this site or any other I'll still be into escorts, I didn't buy mine to fit in and my car isn't ti everyone's taste (not even mine sometimes😳
But it's here to stay and maybe one day I'll be happy with it and to hell with others opinions😏
As for the comments about milking the "scene" I couldn't agree more
My first car in 1986 was 1300l 2 door but this rotted into the ground within 2 years so bought myself a minter rs2000, sold this in 1992 as I no longer had a garage for it and was doing a fair few commuting miles as I was in the RAF. Fast forward to 1998 just moved to Oz and saw a few rs2000's kicking around. The rest is history I suppose and last count in my garage I have the rs2000 which I've owned for the last 12 years, my Roth rep which I built from a base model and owned this for about 7 years and only this year purchased another one for my 2014 project. Was never in the scene as I tendered to do my own thing but definitely an escort nutter who's not in it for the cash :-D
ive always had mk2s since I was 15.. (a while ago)
fell out with the car (3 engines in 3 months was testing!) and the scene a couple of years ago, and ended up selling everything.
did not enjoy the last couple of lakes tours, the back stabbing and slagging of cars was not what I wanted to hear.
the "scene" has changed a lot over the last few years.
the prices of the cars, and the parts has priced a lot of genuine lads out now.
I would love another mk2, and have been to look at a couple this summer, with a bag of cash. ended up walking away, with sellers wanting big money for old knackers.
found a couple of old pics below, from the "good old days" below...
Bet when you started Kev you didn't just drive to a show, park in a field and sit behind your car. Bet you and your mates hooned all over the place, attended motorsport events, hooned to the pub, hooned down the lanes, got in each others garages (or more than likely driveways/roadsides) and got your hands dirty.
One of the main reasons I didn't use my car much for 10 years was I just don't like the "scene" To get excited about the odd big drive out (Lakes, Wales, Scotland etc.... All those roads are open all year ) Then to spend the rest of the year sat in a carcoon and slowly driven into a field and then sit on a deck chair behind your car simply does nothing for me.
I've done 2500 FAST miles this summer, decided I don't give a $hit about how much it's worth and got out a used the car (i dont worry about my 25k everyday car) Only attended one show, (RSOC Cornwall) the rest hooning around to and from friend and motorsport events and loved every mile.
If the current scene is dying then RIP, long live a scene where people don't give a $hit about values and get out and drive!!
This about sums it up for me as well. Did camping in a field for 3 days with bike shows, did travelling to shows with my '68 Cooper S now I've bought a car same as that one I owned 30 years ago and i'm improving it as how I want it and it'll get driven how and when I like and won't be pampered! If someone crashes into it...well sh1t happens! IF I eventually sell it and lose money - so what, as long as I had some fun while I still can! So no i'm not scene, i'm not in the clique but I guess I am an enthusiast?
nat day 2008 was a bloody good laugh. not sure why spence never got me a hat tho
