39 sounds good for a car that size ,,,, tbh I only get 49 out my mondeao so if I find an SUV that returns around 40 I would be happy

got a kuga titaniumx here, stunning spec and drives superb over long distances and plenty of space...

i do use the range rover for towing though

get a test drive in a 2wd kuga and try it on the roundabouts they don't feel all wobbly in the corners and save fuel over awd model if you are doing lots of motorway miles. Mondeos are good handling cars so you would not like a bad handling suv

I drive a 4wd and love it but I don't do huge miles and use a roads mainly so cruising about at 55 or 60 I get 39mpg on trip computer. A workmate drives a 2wd and generally gets 4 or 5 mpg more. awd 163 brake 2wd 142 brake but less weight to pull. mine will set the tail out if provoked in the snow check kuga owners club website and there are pages of peoples mpg figures

4wd kuga here too, it's actually AWD, it only goes to 4 when it needs too, great cab space but the boot is a little small compared to my old A4 estate

4wd kuga here too, it's actually AWD, it only goes to 4 when it needs too, great cab space but the boot is a little small compared to my old A4 estate

i struggled at first with the set position in ours, but actually when i did a long journey in it i realised id not had to stop 3 times, which i would of done in the vectra...

and although i realise kids arent a consideration for alan, but the space for the kids, tables in the back and overall quality of the car, id not hessitate in recommending one

Alan, get a old shape freelander. TD4 engine is actually the BMW 320D and is bullet proof. 37mpg or better all day and despite the soft roader image, will do all you need to do if its for muddy tracks, snow and wet feilds (even on road tyres and in many cases better that a RR or a defender).

A late good spec (ES Auto is the way to go, really) is cheap money and they are like a car to drive. Viscous diff and only jump into 4WD when you need it (automatically). Hill decent and traction control get the job done. Not the greatest on rock climbing but it sounds like that's not what you want it for.

I've had 3 of them, brilliant and my Dad writes articles and test's for Land Rover. He's driven plenty and rates them highly.

You can become a trailer queen too, as it'll tow a escort!!

Don't touch the K series though.

And if the budget allows, the new one is even better (uses a Peugot engine now).

Think Evoke (its the same underpinnings) without the daft price tag and Victoria Beckham has had **** all to do with it (they have made a £80K VB edition Evoke...why??)
