Make sure you do your homework on those fella.

I dare say there are some bargain 996's out there but there lies financial ruin in some as well.

I'd love one, buying seems ok but the maintaining worrys me every time and put me off.

TBH i was just thinking aloud.
I had a boxster when they first came out and although it was a great car to drive and sounded brill,it wasn't without its problems. The 996 was mass produced the same way and i think you're right they are a liability.
          ..
I need to stick to my guns and keep looking for a nice white Focus RS.

I like and own a 911 and those run of the mill 996 ones are dog poo . The worst 911 of all time so steer clear unless it's an RS or GT3 version . The last of the Aircooled models are money in the bank though so you could buy one of those and have zero deprecation forever .

You're spot on Gaz,the 993 is the best aircooled 911...but...your back to floor hinged offset pedals, switches thrown anywhere and no heater!...my mrs aint gonna drive one of them...

She will when turn up in it and she has her own supercar on the drive !!! They have a heater but they work off air from the exhaust manifold rather than water from the engine . Not having the water is what makes them so reliable . Plus they make a Focus look like a wheelie bin , lol .

So today I test drove a focus rs for the first time..it was...er...ok..
It sounded pretty good but not as good or as loud as I was expecting..
It was better over the bumps than I was expecting and it was kind of fast but not earth shattering..the overall feeling was not quite as exciting as I was preparing myself for..I think I know the problem though...
Yesterday I test drove a 996 Carreras 4s...which is the turbo bodied version of the n/a 3.6.It was absolutely stunning to drive and was proper push you in the seat when you gave it the shoe fast, absolutely amazing. It felt like a special occassion driving it which the focus did not.I have real reservations about the running costs though..I haven't bought either........ as I am just confused now.

The Focus may be deceptively fast though, especially if a car is quite quiet you don't "think" you're going fast, when in fact you're hunting along. The old 2.9 4x4 Sierras were like that, it wasn't until you get into something slower that you notice just how quick it was.

I can only quote the following, Porsche make "on average" 30,000 euros profit per car (across their entire range). That means that you're paying over the odds from the very start. Probably nice for a day or two to chuck around but not sure how good it would be long term.

When I used to work for Jaguar, I used to quite fancy the R models, the S-Type or XJ-R with the 4.2 supercharged lump, bags and bags of torque and probably a good cheap toy these days (especially a low milage example).

Here's mine too get you in the mood , lol . I don't do new stuff so have a 1971 model with 3 litre 1980's running gear (most reliable transplant but even the 1990's 3.6 litre gear fits straight in) . Had it about 8 years , never goes wrong , free tax , £100 full comp insurance , bought it for 10 grand and now worth 20+ so cost me foooooook all !!!

If its purely a weekend toy I would be going for the porsche, for me a focus rs is an everyday car,, which will sit there the majority of the time depreciating. Whereas if you buy the right porsche that should hold its money or in some cases appreciate in value
