The swirl flap issues were on the E46 cars. The E90/1/2 engines got larger spindles so eliminated this problem.
I served my apprenticeship as a diesel fuel injection engineer with Lucas CAV. I hated the damn things with a passion.
I now love modern diesels but only the German ones.
My car has a DPF fitted and when it comes to replacement time then I will just by-pass it and have it mapped out. Dpf's only really tend to give problems when the car is driven in city/town conditions all the time so doesn't get the chance to regenerate. I live out in the sticks so no problem for mine.

That's still bloody expensive though isn't? A remap alone must cost 200-300 quid.
Then when you sell the car either it'll have to be put back to standard, i.e. refit the knackered parts or new fitted (depending on how many scruples you have). So it costs you one way or the other.

Just sold a Fiesta diesel 1.8TDI,with 260K on clock, still reliable ,still doing 60MPG,and saleable !If I bought a mercedes Benz C Class SE model it is free of road tax ,as the engines are so clean !
If I was a LOW milage driver then Petrol may be the way to go,but I need a Tubo Diesel car to tow my caravan all over Europe ,and get any decent MPG,AND diesel is CHEAPER in most countries in Europe too !

Those old tdi lumps are pretty bomb proof
Its the modern common rail stuff thats crap.
As for clean emissions, I,ve seen many low/free tax diesels fail first mot on smoke test.
Seems like manufacturers con the system to sell more cars cos theyre cheap tax low emissions and high mpg.
What about all the soot dpfs store then release when they regenerate?!
Whats the point of collecting it just to blow it all out again???

It's the same reason as for the introduction of ethanol in petrol. So that the car manufacturers can get away without improving their engines/management systems. It's the same con as the old exhaust air injection systems.
You can't believe the politicians sign this sort of crap off.

The ethanol is the fault of the Germans, otherwise the big Beamers, Mercs and Porsches would cost the manufacturers money in EU fines for exceeding the CO2 emissions of their "vehicle fleet".
