My first Ford Escort was a mark 1 in Red,in1973,it was "L" registered,and a 1300L for use in my Driving School.At that time i was 33 years old,so no Escorts when i was young only Anglia,s and Prefects

My Dads fault from standing out from I was no age with him taking photos for local papers! He did some co driving for Kevin Doyle of Gilford and won their class in a few rallys including the Circuit when it was a circuit before I came along and my mum put her foot down!

Nothing can slide like an Escort , nothing else is as easy too drive on the limit as an Escort . They look cool and they are easy too build .

Went with my Dad to collect his brand new Mk1 Escort Estate, metallic brown and on a F reg so must have been one of first. It was supplied by Racca Green Garage in Knottingley and I was given a poster of a Twin Cam and some other stuff which made a little boy very happy.
Remember watching Rallycross on TV about the same time. I'am told I said "I'am going to do that". I also got very interested in the World Cup Rally in 1970.
I started Road Rallying as a teenager, was quite happy in either seat.


Before moving on to Stage Rallies.


I've owned 7 myself and Rallied in 18 different ones over the years.

Just found some old cine film it has Dad's Escort estate on it, the reg was VWR413F.

My first car was a Mk1 Escort 1.3 nothing, Reg; ESH 850G. Hand painted black, it cost £125.00. I Shared it with my twin brother as we both passed our test @17 and a half. It was very very rusty and required my uncle to weld it up each weekend for many moons, and used for college in the week.
We used to thrash the living daylights out of it after evening class from Burton upon Trent back home to Derby (15 miles), you could smell the engine oil throughout the car.
Always wanted a sporty model but could not afford one until my Mk2 Mexico Reg: ATO 303T at 19, sold that for £2'500.00 20years ago, bad decision, had children and finally got my MK1 Mexico (car I always wanted) 2 years ago.

Will sell the wife and Children before I part with my RS.

I was 15 and working as a Saturday boy at our local butchers , when one day the young cool guy who worked with me pulled up in a diamond white mk2 mexico , black fishnet recaros , black vynal roof , roaring exhaust. I was knocked for six . It was the first car that ever got under my skin, was love at first sight.

I grew up on a farm in east Yorkshire and every year we got notification through our door that the the beaver road rally would be passing by our house late on on a Saturday evening (think it was in November).
Use to walk up to a '90 right' bend and watch the various makes and models tackle it.
Whilst i enjoyed watching all the cars trying there best to tackle the usually wet and slippery farm road, there was something about the escort that stood out from the rest and the seed was sown.............took me 30 years to get a decent one but it was worth the wait!

Passed me test in 89, had a rust bucket mini for a couple of months, then a mate of a mate turned up one night in a white mk2 Mex, full cage Oscars/Super Oscars on the front, Fast as .... !!
i had to have a mk2, so i ended up having 4, Stockport multi storey carpark on a Sunday afternoon (Before the shops were open), having competitions, who could keep it sideways the longest
makes me grin thinkin bout it now!

Mine was when walking to school a lad had a 4 door mk2 with a set of alloys , then he started lowering it etc then it had a droop snoot fitted with tiger stripes & painted white i used to pass it daily & almost every week it changed , back in 1990 this was amazing and it carried on from there i have bought countess cossies , m3's etc and still ended up back in a mk2

Think they still do the Beaver and i believe Maple are still involved with it. Would love to do it in mine but alas it's not eligible

Around the same years I did the Beaver Rally early 1980's won our class each time I think once in a chit vet and other in a MK1 Escort RS 1600 ,afraid the BDA was not in it as I sold it in bits to Yuk you used to do those sort of things 30 years ago
