Went with my Dad to collect his brand new Mk1 Escort Estate, metallic brown and on a F reg so must have been one of first. It was supplied by Racca Green Garage in Knottingley and I was given a poster of a Twin Cam and some other stuff which made a little boy very happy.
Remember watching Rallycross on TV about the same time. I'am told I said "I'am going to do that". I also got very interested in the World Cup Rally in 1970.
I started Road Rallying as a teenager, was quite happy in either seat.

Before moving on to Stage Rallies.

I've owned 7 myself and Rallied in 18 different ones over the years.

All started for me sitting on my dads lap and steering his mk1 1300GT. He moved onto cortinas after that, but i always wanted an Escort.
So my first car was a mk1 1300L in vista orange. First job was spraying the back panel black (GT style) Rally giants, cut front bumper, and weller wheels
Over the years 5 more mk2's came and went including a mex and a RS2000
and more recently a RS1600i and now another mex

OH and a series 2 RS Turbo WHAT A TURD OF A CAR

Theres were loads about in the mid 90's when I started driving.
Passed up a x pack for a grand that needed floors welding
A yellow 16 sport coy 80t went through a few mates, dad wouldnt let me buy it for £100 with no mot!!!
A local guy tony had a rapid x flowed mk2 that he smoked everywhere, ended up buying my first mk2 off him, red mex yvw801s for £1000 in 98.
We,re good mates now, he traded cars in the 80,s and must have had 100+ mk1/2 rs etc
He,s got a binbag full of pics! Keep trying to get hold of them!

My first car was my grandads 1300 ghia in 95, ended up blowing the engine and discovering Ian Harwoods garage when iwas sourcing an engine...

Then seed was really set in

                2 rs2000's
                2mk2 mexicos
                2 mk1 mexicos
                1 twink
                1 1600 sport
And the red Barron later and I doubt I'll never have one sitting in the garage..

For me though it's all about the crack and banter with the people you meet along the way, there's always help and assistance along the way..
( there's always an xr2 around aswell though)

mk1 was my first car even before i passed my test, had shedloads of mk1s and quite a few mk2s ,
whats really upsetting is that i used to buy them cheap and when mot ran out i would scrap it and get another
i dread to think of the amount of mk1s that ive scrapped

                  sorry

I worked on Mk1, Mk2 Cortinas and Mk1 Escorts after I left school and loved the Lotus Cortinas in the local rallys. I was about to buy a new Capri when a 4 month old Mk1 Escort Sport came along in part ex for a new Avenger Estate. There was a bit of competition from one of the staff about who was going to get offered the car and luckily I won. I was hooked on escorts ever since. The RAC rallys of the 70's also added excitement to owning one.
