To be fair you need a sundial to measure the performance of either.

Standard Mexico versus a Sport. Mex use to do over crapi 2.0 litres in the day!

The sport was always regarded as the better car. Having had both in standard form I would agree. The X Flow was lighter and revved better.

The only thing is the sport wasn't an RS it was the down market car.

                          That's hardly relevant!
I never rated the 1.6 OHC, a 16 sport went pretty well for its time

At the time of manufacture the Mexico was marginaly faster than the Sport. You also have to consider that the RS Mexico engine was heavier and it was also shod with wider tyres, therefore being a heavier car and it also had to cope with more drag.

The advantage of the Sport was that it had a more tunable engine, so at the end of the day it could be easily tuned to outperform the RS.

Being so similar in performance made the cheaper Sport a better buy as sales figures clearly show. Quickly the owners of Sports could easily make their cars appear to look like an RS with the Ford or aftermarket front and rear spoilers that were soon made available.

                            Tim.

Sports are way cooler at present but probably about the same speed as a 1.6 pinto = gutless , lol .
