Well worked for a local family run garage as a saturday lad for 2 years from 14-16 and then been there ever since 27 years got a letter yesterday that there all going to retire and sell buisness as a going concern, anyone know how I will stand for redundancy if it sells and if they end my contract or does it go over to new owner? Bit lost really, its been on the cards for a while but still a bit of a shock really and they have been really good to work for? unless someone can lend me 1.5 million to buy it

                                Paul,

First thing is try not to worry too much.

The Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations (TUPE) law covers you, your employer should consult with you and other members of staff affected by the sale of the business. Most business will not change any T&C's in the first year, and have to take into account your service as unbroken.

Please speak to someone from Acas (08457 47 47 47) 8-8 Mon to Fri and 9-1 Sat they are friendly and speak in plain English an can explain the law to you much better than I can. Also I think the TUC has a really good printable leaflet on there site, have a look.

I can have ago at answering some of your questions if you need please feel free to PM me if you feel the need. I was a union shop-steward and now a elected representative of a group of employees at my current place of work.
                                Steve
