  • Safety gear - it does the job!!

Not wanting to come across as Kenny Everet's Character "Reg the DIYer"

But spent a few lovely hours in Warrington A&E with a nice deep cut to the back of my left hand caused by a shattered 4 inch steel cutting disc.

Brand new disc and being used properly. Thankfully I was wearing proper leather gloves, overall's and safety glasses. Might have looked a t**** but the gloves did there job. The left hand glove had the back ripped open as the blade shards went through it but must have took some of the blow.

I had both hands on the top of the grinder but the blade just went everywhere (Brand new too).

A clean up, xray, removal of some of the shards/bone, 15 stitches later, a whole lot of blood and I was on my way.

It caught the bone, cut right through the flesh and missed the tendon by about a mm reckoned the surgeon!!

I was very lucky really. Might have lost half my hand or some fingers if was not wearing them according to the staff. NHS, did a cracking job too.

    SO WEAR THE RIGHT STUFF!!!

Funnily enough, I actually heard the bang and felt nothing apart from a tingle, bloody sore a few hours later mind!!!

I've gotten a bit safer in my later years too!! Make me shudder to think of what we used to do!

Remember years in the uk a mate lost a knuckle due to blade shattering and I always have the memory of his scared hand so yeah I even wear all the clobber when I'm using the lawn mower/whipper snipper/ lawn edger. Yeah I look a knobbber with overalls/saftey boots/eye protection etc on in 30+ degrees heat but I have all my pinkies and intend on keeping them.

          You were very lucky!

Good job you had the kit on, and no shrapnel in the eyes- no fun having splinters removed!

Had a fuel tank breather catch a few years ago when welding! Managed to knock the flames out with gloves...too close for comfort.! Now remove fuel tanks and lines!

Had a fight with a circular saw and ended up in operating theatre. Skin graft 21/2 hour op.

There was a video on you tube about out of date discs being sold with stickers over the date,it has now been removed,
They were from a well known company begining with C.
Check any others you have from the same batch and see if theres a date sticker on it, if so peel it back and see if there is an out of date stamp under it.

That's very interesting as that is where they came from!!

I'll check tonight. Is the sticker on each individual disc? or on the pack (think it was a pack of 4, fresh last night)

If its a good quality disc the date will be printed on the disc rather than on a sticker

each individual disc should be date stamped, not by a sticker but actually on the printed label on it..

when i first came to kazakstan the dutch lads were using 3 year out of date discs that had arrived with the dredger, straight in the bin!

as said goggles and gloves are a must when doing anything, however we are guilty of diving in somtimes without ppe on.

glad your ok though dave, an the sky remote is still usable.. im more amazed your still not sat in warringtons a&e

Each disc had a sticker over the original date with a in date er date, if you know what i mean.
Your not the first mate, search out of date cutting disc on google.
