  • How was this still running ???

Had a customer bring their car in to me today with a metallic spinning noise coming from the engine - VW Golf 1.4 16v 2001 63,500 miles

Note:- Belt has a 60,000 mile or 5 year life and this car had never had a belt in 10 years

A quick check I soon found noise was from the cambelt area

Stripped it down and found that 1 guide wheel had shattered and the tensioner had shed its plastic wheel as well !

Car ran fine but was noisy and the adjuster had taken up the slack to enable engine to still run

2nd pic shows what the wheels should look like

BTW you can route the CVH belt two ways, one where the belt cover fits and the other where it doesn't. The engine will run with the belt routed either way around

Common fault this week Dave Had a guy come in with a focus said it kept stalling at road ends and could he book it in next week, I said no problem penciled it in for the day later! But just as he was leaving I heard the car start up and told him to turn it straight off ! This is what was making his noise and this was a 40k and 6 year old motor these are supposed to be 10year or 100k belt changes??? lucky bu**er

Paul whenever I carry out repairs to VW Audi Seat or Skoda cars you cant beat TPS for genuine parts and their prices are sometimes cheaper than pattern parts - but you already know that - lol

if it breaks it wasn't strong enough

Yep all ordered along with the new shoes and cylinders

Good bit of fault diagnosis today on that injector though - just shows you cant always trust a diagnostics machine !!

Yeah lucky that it wasn't a major pain in the ass to keep swapping plugs/coil packs and injectors around, saved the customer the cost of a needless coil pack (or four) though. The brakes were something else though, should make somebody a tidy little runaround when it's done, I'll drop into Mikeanics to see if he knows to any secong hand ecu's, what was the model number again?

The rollers packing up is common these days, seemed to be a new trick to extract money from people (started by Ford). The costs were cut and cut so that the OE jockey wheels and tensioners fall to bits.

Now it is commonplace to replace the idlers and tensioners as a matter of course. The head I took off my RS had the original INA tensioner still fitted, no whine, no play, nothing, 30 years later.
