How was this still running ???

Now it is commonplace to replace the idlers and tensioners as a matter of course. The head I took off my RS had the original INA tensioner still fitted, no whine, no play, nothing, 30 years later.

good old Pinto tensioners seem to last the lifetime of the car - built to last you see - lol lol

Had a customer bring their car in to me today with a metallic spinning noise coming from the engine - VW Golf 1.4 16v 2001 63,500 miles

Note:- Belt has a 60,000 mile or 5 year life and this car had never had a belt in 10 years

A quick check I soon found noise was from the cambelt area

Stripped it down and found that 1 guide wheel had shattered and the tensioner had shed its plastic wheel as well !

Car ran fine but was noisy and the adjuster had taken up the slack to enable engine to still run

yep sounds like a golf
