It's not £500 but I'd do it at £600 seen as it's for you

Looks a nice bike but out my price range tbh. I have a 29" inside leg so will need a small frame I think. Hopefully will be using it a lot to build up my stamina again. Have also been looking at a cannondale Trail sl5 but the decathlon bike has everything I want. I think. Lol

Kev are you or any family member an employee of the council or emergency services ? bikes to work scheme has good discounts and maybe bring a better thing within budget
I've got a Specialised Rockhopper Disc which I've had for the last few years and its a good all round hardtail for the money
Agree, Specialized are top bikes and the Rockhopper is a good start, had one before it got nicked
Upgraded to a Specialised Enduro 2003 model, always got 10/10 from the press
This has a lock-out on the front and rear and I use it to ride to work
You can pick them up off ebay from £200 now.
If your going to do mostly roads a hardtail is best with road tyres.
Best go into your local bike shop and have a fitting to find the right bike for what you want, but if you can get disc brakes.
