Who on here is a HGV Driver.? And how has the weather affected you.? Maybe a daft question for some of you but curious to find out.
Do you think a lot more could and should have been done to keep road network running and if your an Owner Driver like I was once how is it affecting you.?

I think someone should get shafted for the state of the roads tbh!

Its embarrassing how everywhere that has suffered the heavy snowfall and artic conditions that our roads cannot cope

Really feel sorry for alot of folks in lorries etc as I have seen loads stuck at the side of the road on a slight incline with ice.

Actually seen a B&Q driver stuck yesterday and he was out directing traffic around him...while trying very hard not to fall on his jacksie ...fair play to him.

Are you an owner driver Baxter or work in haulage?

I definetly think something could have been done, its crazy how everywhere just ground to a hault.

I must admit it didnt help that some people were abandoning there cars at the daftest of places also causing havoc!

I have been out driving fuel tankers for the last couple of weeks, the snow is ok to drive on because it is very dry almost like powder. Still has not stopped me getting stuck countless times, but if you are prepared to work in it then you should be prepared to dig yourself out of it.

The UK is not prepared for this kind of weather though and this is because all of the barm pot green loonies keep on telling us that we are going to get warmer winters due to global warming. Not seen much evidence of it this winter or last winter.

In the 70's we were all going to die from lead in Petrol, in the 80's we were going to have our flesh burnt off our bodies from Acid Rain, in the 90's we were all going to die from skin cancer because the Ozone layer was getting burnt away by CFC's, in the 0's its Global warming, what will get us after the 31st of December when we hit the 10's ?

Poverty because of this stupid government son!! Nothing they do or say will make things any better for the foreseeable future, none of them live in the real world.
As for the roads this week and the fiasco up around Glasgow this week things could have been handled a bit better.
I am myself an owner driver it’s not that busy at the moment as I work in the Building trade hauling materials. December is always a bad month, but the thing that ****is me off is the car drivers going so slow in front of you, they don’t seam to grasp that if you have a 44 ton truck on ice or snow it takes two miles to stop it and when it does stop it won’t just set of the same as a Nissan micra, AND WHY IS IT THEY ALWAYS STOP YOU RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF A HILL you get stuck and then it’s reported as a jack knifed HGV closes the road when it was little miss daisy that should have taken notice of the police and stayed at home that day, or the prat with his BMW that has no idea why the back wheels are going round on ice and snow but he’s going nowhere.
Strikes me half of the cars drivers on the road today are oblivious of what is going on around them and never use a mirror and only look as far as the end of the bonnet
And have no idea about what the car there sitting in is capable of doing or how it works

ye the roads could do with more grit and more done to help everbody get to where they need to go the snow over the last week or so has been a nitemare .
am lucky a havent been out driving in a lorry for over a month now so missed it.i side with all the lorry drivers out there ........

I'm a self-employed HGV Driver and work for a variety of 'clients' from bog standard, supermarket delivery/supply chain around the UK (for various Agencies), to European work for the Entertainments/Show Biz sector on a private basis. At this time of year due to the nature of this country and it's incompetence to dilligently 'cope' with a moderate sub-zero temperature or any significant snowfall, I switch to working for the Royal Mail doing local collections in a 17-tonner. Same money, less hassle, even if a bit boring. People need their Xmas pressies/cards collected...

I agree; trouble is as the cars become more 'intelligent', it takes the emphasis away from the driver and they become less aware of what's required of them. Technology has made people more 'stupid' and less able to exercise common sense in such situations. In the 70's people probably just looked out of their bedroom window and though fcuk that and stayed in bed; though the 'metal' of people then was FAR geater as we all know compared to now. Your 'Little Miss Daisy' example is spot on, she should have stayed at home and called a sickie with her grossly overpaid public sector position..

The whole situation can be resolved easily by getting your local farmers involved.
We had a snow plough of our own and cleared the local roads when they needed.

BUT THEN.........

We were officially dipped and told that next time we were clearing the roads on Red diesel we would be fined as it wasn't 'agricultural' but commercial. Which is true.

Sold the plough.

We have a fleet of over ten tractors that could be clearing roads continually if required but instead are sitting tucked up nice and cosy in a shed.

Other agri contactors in the area are exactly the same. Some are on contract for the airports, others for the docks. We do a little landfill and quarry site clearance but none of us will touch the roads.

This government is creaking with civil servant wankers who bring this country to its knees with petty red tape.

The public sector is bigger than the private sector!!
How can that be?????????

the major problel is tossers who have 4x4 and think they can get anywhere they seem to forget in this weather they only stop and go round coners as good as 2wd seen a few crash at the local school this week

Mums in 4x4's doing the school run Our school is full of them and not one seems to know how to drive on snow and ice. They all have summer tyres on as well on their BIG alloys I put a set of winter tyres (Dunlop SP Winter Sport's) on the SuperPoo and to be honest, it's the best thing ever and recommended to all (Tyres, not the car ) I have had no problems with snow or ice. I have even been towing Helen's Mini up the driveway!!!

Do what they do in Canada ,haulage firms must have so many vehicles
in their fleet fitted with ploughs, proper winter tyres and chains.
You are also required by law to clear your own driveway ,paths and
roadway in front of your property.
There were some pretty unprofessional lorry drivers on Monday that got themselves into situations they should and could have avoided, its not only tossers in 4x4 that think they can go anywhere,and no I dont
have a 4x4 .

im a 4x4 owner and have been for 14 year and
i ain,t no tosser.
i am a 44 ton truck driver and have had a hell of a time wih toss pot car driver,s who havn,t a clue how to drive in snow or don.t listen to advice.
and i can tell you my old disco has done sterling work where we live towing various vehicles out of snow and ditches inc an artic.
i agree some 4x4 qwners havn.t a clue how to drive or use them .

I am and I am a class one instructor but it aint affeceted me as i dont do that any more
