Yes I can understand what you mean by just changing gear less. The ordinary 2.0 T9 box does have a hell of a gap in it from 1st to 2nd and it does effect the smoothness of the change. Why on earth Ford continued to use these awful ratios, I don't really know....I can never find an answer.
By the way the A on the side of the box is on the casting which is used for many of the variations. The only true way of identifying the box is by the metal plate affixed to the box or opening it up and counting the number of teeth on the gears.
