i`m driving 450 miles at the weekend from aberdeen to north wales to see my folks.i`m going in my mk1 the problem is i`ve got to pack 3 suitcases,a gearbox,trolley jack,toolbox,an amplifier,a guitar,me,the wife,2 kids and the dog and his bed.knowing the wife ther will be even more stuff coming back

made it! the only thing we didn`t manage was the amplifier. 460 miles in 8 hours including a half hour and 15 minute stop!75-85 mph all the and the car never missed a beat and used £65 worth of fuel.now to change the gearbox.

managed the 450 mile trip home today in the RS without a hitch and it was much better coming back with the new 2.8 capri gearbox fitted as it cruised in 5th much better than the old sierra 5 speed and it only used a tank and 3/4 of fuel compared to 2 and a 1/4 on the way down.although the speedo is a mile out it was 85 miles more coming back as it was going!will have to change the speedo drive i think.

Glad you got back home safe and sound.

I am facinated with your fuel consumption results here.

I don't doubt you for one moment but I'm surprised that you have saved half a tank of petrol with the 2.8 box as I had always believed that you got better performance out of one but at the cost of a bit of extra fuel. There is also the fact that you were cruising back on a very long stretch of motorway where the 5th gear ratio on the 2.8 box is 0.83 and the prevous box if was a standard 2.0 box is 0.82. hardly anything in that!....or was the previous 5 speed out of something else which may have made the difference?

Any ideas why, as I was faced with the choice a few years back when I fitted a type 9 in mine. I chose the standard 2.0 box because I liked the economical, less revs and less wear option.

hi tim,what i can say is that i must have been travelling at the same speed as the journey took the same time ie if i didn`t stop it would have been 7 hours non-stop both ways as i travelled during quiet periods with no hold ups.it just seemed that top gear was far better for cruising.not only that but with the new box going through the gears is a lot less harsh ie when starting off i find that i`m going through the gears a lot less with the new box ie i`m still in 2nd when i would be at least in 3rd with the old box.the old box has an A stamped on the side of it and i believe that this is a standard sierra type 9 box.still a decent box instead of 4 speed i must add.i hope this helps and i have explained it clearly.all i can say its well worth modifiying and fitting a 2.8 box if you can find one.i got one for a bargain £80 so i couldn`t refuse it really.

Yes I can understand what you mean by just changing gear less. The ordinary 2.0 T9 box does have a hell of a gap in it from 1st to 2nd and it does effect the smoothness of the change. Why on earth Ford continued to use these awful ratios, I don't really know....I can never find an answer.

By the way the A on the side of the box is on the casting which is used for many of the variations. The only true way of identifying the box is by the metal plate affixed to the box or opening it up and counting the number of teeth on the gears.
