      First Rally

We lived in East Africa (Uganda & Kenya) before coming to the UK at the age of 8 in 1971. I can remember my dad taking me and brother in the 60's to local rallys and the East African Safaris. The local rallys used to run thro our town and somtimes pass near our house. I can remember seeing the likes of Joginder Singh fixing his car outside our house. It was great times as a kid and the atmosphere although very informal was very exciting.

My first rally in the UK was when went to Chatsworth House in the early 80's (can't remember the exact year). The first car that went by was Ari Vatenan in the Group B Peugeot - I nearly $hit myself at speed at which he went past me on the stage!

fist stage rally was Welsh 1995, remember the service was at Libunus petrol station just south of Brecon.

I can remember watching a very early 60s RAC come down Skipton High Street,The local man was Ian Appleyard with his wife navigating ,in a cream Jaguar XK 120/140,a works car as Ian was married to Sir William Lyons daughter.Who was the boss of Jaguar Cars .The registration was NUG120
Ian owned the Appleyard group in Leeds ,who John Millington started out as an apprentice motor mechanic with.
The "European Rally History Group" (an informal group of anoraks of which I seem to have become the UK rep) were debating the Appleyard Jaguar not so long ago. NUB120 was the original car (alloy bodied like the first 6 120s?) and it was replaced by RUB120, a similar looking/same colour car but believed steel bodied. We think this change was in 1953. It's complicated because the Appleyards used a Mk7 on the Tulip, where sports cars were heavily handicapped. So it wasn't early 60s you saw!
Tony Fall was a salesman for Appleyards wasn't he at the time he got the good European results (Coupe des Alpes etc) in a private red/black Cooper S CAK500C and gained a BMC works drive.
Carles Bosch (whom I'm sure would prefer to be called Catalan, not Spanish), is the Jaguar expert in that group, so I'll ask him what he has on the Appleyard car. There's a replica "NUB" around today, just as there is a replica of the Gatsonides Monte Zephyr. We're all experts on replicas aren't we.........

83 RAC was Bath based, overnight in Bo'ness on Windermere. Did it have a TC at Chester??
                      Based there 81 and 84.
