Anyone had trouble registering a car from Ireland?

Dear All,

Just wondering if any of you have had any problems registering a car in Wales/England/Scotland that has been purchased from Northern Ireland.

As you know, Cath and I bought the 1300 Sport in June from Laurence in Ireland. We sorted out the the V5 and it was posted off to the "DVA" in Ireland as advised on the form.

The "DVA" then wrote to Cath and I saying as the car was in Wales the form had to be sent to the DVLA in Swansea. We did so and didnt hear anything for about 4 weeks.

This week we have had a letter saying the car now has to be "imported" to the UK and re-registered? Is this the norm? Im confused, as this is a genuine UK car.

Has anyone experienced the same problems with the DVLA?

I reckon if the car came from southern ireland then yes it will be classed as an import if it came from nothern ireland thats classed as uk
southern i think is classed the same as europe!!! correct me if im wrong??

it's the system the dvla use just to **** us off you will have to import it to mainland then re-register it!!! if you want u can keep NI plate as cherish plate

you are luckey they will give you a period plate for your sport we only get 2009 plate on or mk2 etc when we bring from mainland for more than 12 months

The car is on UK plates. It was originally registered in Liverpool from what I can tell.

It went from Cumbria late last year to Northern Ireland, then we bought it in June and it was back here by the end of June.

Im still confused.

You still have to re-register it even though it has English plates etc.
Same the other way, if we bring a car over from england we have to re-register it here too.
Ridiculous, it's even exactly the same V5 form.
We are all supposed to be in the UK!

have you a local dvla office you can get too, much easier doing it all over the counter

On this, do we have a choice of the ZV.... or year -county-number style, and can you request (and obviously pay a hefty fee for) a half decent number.. like when registering a new car ?? Will be doing mine next year

if the car is 30 years or older then you have a choice. I don't know on that one. A friend of mine went round every tax office till he found a county with a 3 digit ZV plate.

Letter sent to the DVLA explaining the situation. It appears they have made an error with the records about the car on their system.

I can confirm i bought the car from the Liverpool area in 2000, and is definately a UK car. I sold it to a work colleague who restored it and then it left for the Emerald Isle last year.

i purchased from ni which is part of the uk and changed over to v5 with no problems in glasgow the car was on a uk plate but had ni log book but had no trouble but you wont have to export it as northern ireland is part of greast britain

It's not that hard to sort out an Irish number anyway but it can be dangerous
