  • Ford Ranger

Has anyone got/had one , around a 53 plate 2.5td , thinking of buying one but a few people have said they have problems, obviously all the commercial dealers I am speaking to say they don't. Just wondered if there were any horrors to reveal and what the running costs were like.

    cheers, Paul

my mate has the nissan version and they are being re-called cos of rattles from the engine its a 54 plate and he wouldn't recommend one

my other mate test drove them all before buying a couple of hilux's sure he said the ford was worst on fuel although best spec leather etc

I have had a couple borrowed them from Father in Law, they pull trailers well

drink lots are a bit rattley and quite a boaty ride not for the motion sickness lot

Nissan version?? You mean the nevaro? There not based on the ranger,, the mazda bt is..

I had one as a company demo, and the good work horses,, if you can stretch your budget i'd go for the newer shape 07 onwards,, much nicer vehicle

i would go for the hilux, had hilux's for 10 years now never let me down, but as long as you are not working the ranger to hard their ok,and alot cheaper to buy

                  Go toyota

I would go Toyota. The Aussie,s wont run anything that has to take any punishment but the Toyota, they say nothing else can stand the strain.
A garage mate of mine has had 4 or 5 Mitsubishi,s in with broken cranks or rods through the side ,all around 50 to 60 k.he is convinced there is a problem ,in the 53/04 ones !

but i'll be putting a ton of granite in mine dave - that'll steady her a bit

interesting about all the replies - toyota's do look good, but they are higher in price - quality obviously costs

I've got a 54 plate Ranger as a daily drive and to be honest, I can't fault it. I've owned it since it was a year old with 3,000 miles on the clock. It has now done 54,000.

It is a little thirsty - I get around 320 miles per tank which works out around 25 MPG, but I'm not particularly gentle with the throttle and its more economical than the Sapphire Cossie that I had before that.

Even with the back full of tools/spares (I've got a truckman top) and the rally car on a trailer towing behind, it will happily cruise along at 80.

I'd considered upgrading to a new shape one (they're a little more economical with the tdci - about 30 MPG) but the money I'd lose on mine and the cost of a new one doesn't make it worthwhile.

And.. because its classed as a Light Goods Vehicle, road tax is £185 - which isn't too bad. (Well, compared to my dad's 1.6 Zafira that costs him over £200 I think...)

Toyota - looked at a HiLux, a few years older than the Ranger, it was rough and the dealer wouldn't take bids on it, was too dear for what it was,and it wasn't a club cab agree tho' they are probably the best.

Navaras - heard a lot of bad reports

L200 - had one out and obviously been in fathers, would be my second choice but club cabs (not full double cab) are few and far between, have also heard of engine problems especially if chipped.

Ranger - like the price, like the supercab version (not full double cab), its a Ford , like the styling , fuel I can live with

thanks for the replies, the wife just read them over my shoulder, shook her head and walked away ..............
