it is quite simple (despite all the know it all's) chassis number = number of body produced i.e. identity of that single shell/assembly.
a vehicle deemed repairable may be "reshelled" i.e. may only retain the identity as it is using a service shell (in the case of the MkI/IIs having a remark stamped into build plate) using anyother body renders the current shell (VIN/identity) invalid.
This is exactly the reason VW and other manufacturers restrict the supply of parts (esp. trim) that could turn an ordinary model into a special edition vehicle, as these had a higher initial price and higher resale value.
Whether or not people have illegally reshelled vehicles or indeed a few years back it wasn't followed up as intensely is immaterial, it is not allowed.
If you bought said vehicle only to discover it wasn't as described you would 1: out of pocket and 2: entitled to compo.

The bloke that re-shelled my 1980's BMW Alpina E28 5 series (rotten and crashed shell) wrote to the DVLA asking for info regarding the transfer of chassis numbers etc before he did it . They said that they're not bothered about 20+ year old car restos provided the new shell's not stolen and is the same type/shape as the original (so E28 to E28 shape and not into a E30 3 series etc) . As usual this is a grey area and most people will just do it anyway i reckonsigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .
Tick tock goes the clock and the clock don't lie .
12.4sec to 109mph With NO turbo , NO gay trailer , NO slicks , NO gas , NO race fuel and NO bits missing . Beat that !!!!

Sorry , had to answer the phone ............ back to the re-shell topic :
Provided any rotten/crashed car is re-shelled into an eqivilent spec clean shell (so a 1971 MK1 rs1600 into another 1971 AVO shell or failing that a 1971 1100L shell with the AVO body bits fitted to it) and the new buyer is informed then i can't really see a problem myself . After all that's no different too chopping out all the rust and D.I.Y. welding/replacing 90% of the original body with a load of repair panels is it ? At least the re-shell has a proper body .
Very tricky topic this and i'm sure we'll never agree but it's good to talk .sigpic 2.1 ATMO YB POWER .
