    My opinion

An RS should be on the shell it left the factory with, if it was damaged early in life/or later and was reshelled with a brand new service shell from Ford fair enough, that is a correct reshell.

If you have a rusty or pranged RS and you repair it into a previously road registered pop/L or even RS shell then that is a ringer.

If you have a rusty car and you repair/replace full panels to the factory seams/joins with genuine panels then that is a restoration and still a true RS.

Too many ringers about that people prefer to call reshells, too many logbooks and not enough new shells.

I will now duck for cover

i started this thread as i restore lots of classic motorbikes and this also happens in the bike circles but in the few months that i have been doing my homework on rs2000's there seems to be loads of logbooks for sale and ringers out there just wanted others opinions as i dont want to get stung

thanks to the people who have pm there thoughts about this

As well as BDAs, there are more RS2000s out there than Ford ever made!
Another MK1 Mex logbook on the bay as I type!

                Very interesting this .
As said earlier by Ruddy a re-shell into a new geninue Ford spare "RS" bodyshell is ok and is still considered by many to still be a genuine "RS" . Now all "RS" shells were 1100L shells which were plucked off the production line and then retro fitted with the "RS" strengthening plates etc . Now you could argue that anyone with half a brain can spot weld a few extra plates onto an 1100L shell and make an "RS" shell (and they do) and this is no different to a spare production shell really . So this means that the 2 shells are really the same but everyone will say that the homemade one is a "ringer" .
In my old age i've since thought about this many many times and if i ever bought another BDA model then i would buy the car i thought was the best for the price and not worry too much about how many shells it's had . If i did then i'd never ever buy one as it would do my head in !!!!!!!!!

if you read the excellent article in retro ford on the alan mann escort XOO349F you will see it started life as an 1100 and if you look at the inner wings no strenghtened top plates.everbody assumes the car is a twin cam.or is it? however it is still one of the top 5 most valuable escorts around probably commanding £100 000+

Yes anything with a high profile racing history is worth a fortune . Collectors love a bit of that but we all know this means they are all 99.9% "ringers" as they had 15 shells !!!!!!!!

Now gaz thats not strictly correct!!! all the cars did not start off as pops.
you just need to look at the nos panels that come up for sale, some are for std model cars and some for rs type.

The rs shells were built with the correct dictating rs panels by the same machines that that built the std ones part by part and not complete std shells taken and rs'ed up.

GCAT OR RS CARS so to speak are german built HENCE the G

FAKING as i call it is not that simple, there are pressings, fixings and various small details some of which are very hard to replocate.

I would rather have a car thats had a load of gen panels replaced than a reshell into a std 2 door, BUT its a personal choice!!!

Now im sure ruddy will authenticate what Ive said when he lifts his head

Now, I will get my coat!! oh and just so we are straight this is factual banter gaz not a go at you or for that matter am I slating anybody's cars!!!

                      regards john

Yes you can buy new old stock "RS" innerwing panels etc etc but they are still only original 1100L panels with the extra "RS" bits spot welded onto them . These "RS" bits are also on "Export" shells so nothing special at all .
Lots of firms re-make these extra "RS" bits and many people use them to rebuild their cars from good rust free standard 1100L Escort panels cut from scrap cars etc . To all intent and purposes they are the same .

more logbooks for sale on ebay cant understand why people do this as buyers dont benefit until they sell the car then it can come back and haunt them

If an 1100L shell is professionally rebuilt using all the extra "RS" bits (not much then except a few extra bits) then it will be the same as a rebuilt "genuine RS" shell except people won't like it . Most desirable classic car sports models are "triggers brooms" anyway and as the years roll on more and more will turn into these . Porsche 911 RS's , Sunbeam Lotus' , chevette HSR's , Fiat 131 Abarth's , etc etc etc all get the same treatment i'm affraid .
