  • How Mk1 rs2000 & mexicos are genuine cars

Been lookingto buy a car for a few months now there seems to be more logbooks for sale than cars so this makes me think how many cars are geniune thats out there is this common pratice as its known as ringing to be fair and illegal

Good morning Steven,Yes ringing of the RS models is an extremely common practise to defraud people of their money. Faking of these models has been done for the whole of the production life and extremely often done by the boy racers . Sticking Mexico/RS2000 graphics on the 1100CC Pop makes it look more respectable. This was done more to impress probably not to decieve monetarily. The value of the RS and desirability leads to the practice of reshelling which is another way used by many to decieve, by using another vehicles V.I.N tags on another shell. An extremely common devious tactic. It is always wise to take some one who knows about these cars when you are looking as you will also be able to learn what to look out for.

It's a bit more sophisticated than that!

It is possible to purchase the parts that will make a regular shell look like a type 49 shell.

fakes are easy to spot , forget the type 49 strengthening that means nothing there are some tale tale signs , which or less you are a total anorack you would not know about , and all but the most determined faker would do and if they have done it that well then fair play to them as it is most probably a concourse car and know one would ever know the difference and believe you me there are lots of concourse winning mk1s out there that started life as 1100s and 1300s.

maybe now you understand the reason my car was for sale at the price it was due to there being no doubt of its originality, you may think a shiney restored car is cheaper but what are you buying

Originals are hard to find then Dave.

Which is probably why original cars dictate the real price. I know of the RS16's that occasionally come up for sale are a definate buyer beware

Ask someone who knows or join the club (RS or AVO) and speak to the registrar

Well all you need to do is print off a buyers guide, and take it with you to the car you are looking at,and spend ages going through every little bit to see if it's a proper RS...I think this is the best way,or take someone who has known them for years

If you want an "original" mk1/2 RS Escort what do you all call "original" then ? Is it a rotten old shell welded up with patches everywhere with an engine + gearbox from another car or a rebuilt/restored shell with all new panels except the roof with another engine + gearbox from another car ? Well both are "triggers brooms" .
In my opinion a 95% repanelled shell with all new trim and running gear is as much a "fake" as one built from a log book into a 1300L to the same spec surely .
What do you lot think then ? Am i the only one who thinks that an "original" RS should have most of it's "original" shell and "original" trim + mechanical parts still present then ?
