yes, they were exciting times, although little did we realise at the time.
Rothmans brought huge awareness to the sport, do you remember the huge billboard posters, the Rally giants are back, or something like that, and of course, the 'Collins Cars' clan (phill, John, etc) bringing out their unique rally jackets, rather colourfull but with the logo "Quattro's are Boring" embroided on the rear, and there were several places you could specialise for an RS, City speed (Gloucester), Mike Youngs (Essex) Cardiff competition cars (Llandaff), it was often a weekend spent visiting all three.
Motoring News classifieds would be full with about two pages of Escorts in all manner of guises for sale, with the odd chevette, sunbeam, mini or avanger there also.

    great days............................

.............you could go into a RS dealer and still get stuff new, usually in stock too if it was a decent dealer, quite often the parts guy was an enthusiast and even gave you a little more time / Respect than the average guy who was in for brake pads for his cortina.

Crikey, whats happened, these days i go to ford dealers and usually end up telling them that there were Escorts that were not FWD but becauise they cant find the details on their computer, it couldnt have existed

thank god for Tim, Hally, etc

remember fondly the great service you would get from Brooklyn ford, Gibbs Tredegar, Trimoco Dunstable, Tildsley ford, thomas motors, Haynes and a few others out there

time to end the thread, however you only have to look at the amount of discussion and interest over the very recent McRae stages and all things Ford Escort to see that the ole Days were indeed, Good days

The McRae Rally was a taste of what we had all those years ago.

Sorry to keep it going a bit longer Graham!
