My comments of seeing Ian Appleyard on the RAC would have been 1956/57
when I was 16 y.o.NOT 1951 like you suggested Keith.
My first car at 17 was a 1937 Ford 8 with the front doors opening out from the front...My first driving school car was a 1961 Triumph Herald 1200
then Morris1100,s then Vauxhall Viva,s THen I found the magic of the Ford Escort, and still run Fords even today for instruction.Even had a Ford D 800 artic for HGV tuition .those were the days !!!

My cousin worked in Gibbs Bros Rs Dealership in Tradegar hence I had all the brochures when they came out.Remember seeing all the Escorts in the showroom and the first Java green RS2000.
Had my first Mk1 Mexico in 1977 used to follow the RAC from start to finish with a mate who knew a photographer who used to get the 'Secret ' route in advance!
We planned our route for weeks great times.
I have some photos somewhere of F.English in Bournemouth when I went and bought my Signal 80 RS2000 LEL80W in 1980, there were loads of RS'S for sale outside.

Malcolm Gibbs name came up elsewhere recently, with a UK rally man who has been in Australia since 1980 asking if it was correct MG was killed in a car crash in comparatively recent years. I think he was - on the M4.
I watched the MN Championship Gremlin Rally one year when it started from Gibbs, Tredegar (and have to say it was a bit tame in the wet over the Abergwesyn).
MG was best known in the Cortina days and was British Rally Champion then. He later returned with Mexicos/fairly std RS1600s, best known being CAX2K but also running AWO2K (which is a reg no someone from here should have!).
I bought some parts off CAX2K about 1977, lamp brackets, cibie's and a strut brace plus some other bit cost me £11 in total!. I think then wasn't Gorden Batchelor driving it.
CAX2K was at AVO National day a few years ago looked like it had been restored but still used in competition

that would have been when Ron hudson was out in the ex brookes andrews car (childrens books) circa 83-85, think Neil Jones won the event in a TR7 V8
Malcolm gibbs personal mechanic was / is a friend of mine and we lived close to each other in Aberfan, AWO 2K was alive and around in Twynyrodyn, Merthyr Tydfil for many years and was a rally car used for these new "fangled" single venue rallies plus the night events.

My friend owns CAX2K and you are correct her restored the car !
I also own the last ever RS2000 MK2 to be sold by Gibbs/ Ford Thorne Tredegar, still has the dealer tax disc holder and rear dealer sticker on the rear window
I've still got my Rallyesport jacket I bought it on the RAC in 1978, and yes it still fits me! Also got an RS jumper now that is too small for me.

Actually it was 1970!
I know because I met up there with fellow south east road rally competitor the late Jack Barnard in his TC, JJY77G (which someone is now restoring and contacted me recently for any memories of it, just as Peter Robinson's book "Memory Lanes" came out).
Finish was at Penoyre Country Club.
