            Was born in 82 so too young to remember works escorts .
            My first R.A.C was 87 and ive been on everyone since.
            Do have fond memories of club drivers in mk2's in the 80's/90's,Banner(EHY390W),Ian Joel(NET162R),Phil Burton(PUW113R,still got it) etc etc especially on my local rally the Silva Stages in Gisburn Forest .

              wish i was alive in the 70's/80's,those were the days of the proper cars Even born in 1991 i was still too young to know anything about cars back then,even though the 90's was a very good decade for escorts and RS's ect
              Just wish i could of seen all the mk1/mk2 escorts brand new to see what they were like all fresh ect !...and to stock up on the parts when they were cheap

                remember well going into my local ford dealer ship in the 80's and being able to buy new mk1 rs wings for £25 with a bit of discount

                          My interest started a bit earlier when I was in my primary school playground looking at all the fuss in the garage across the road from me. A guy my family knew was displaying his rally prepared Triumph Herald ready for the Monte Carlo Rally. I don't know how he got on in the rally, but it spurred me into an apprentice mechanics job 4 years later in that garage.

                          I began my interest in Fords when a tyre fitter there had this Mk1 Cortina GT, it sounded lovely, and looked the part. The garage hosted many rallys in those days and in the compound you would find Anglias, Lotus Cortinas, GT's, Escort twin cams, RS1600's, amongst of course many other British makes.

                          While employed at the garage one or two other makes of new cars stood out at that time. Hillman Avenger Tiger, Vauxhall Firenza Droop Snoot and Triumph TR6, Hillman Hunter GLS, all different in their own way, but were all fun to drive.

                          The parts dept in those days would be manned by several staff who new the parts numbers from memory, and often had most of what you wanted in stock. Today the parts departments are getting fewer, are usually manned by one guy on his own, and the part has to be ordered.

                          My first RAC rally was 73 or 74 Daily Mirror RAC Rally, and as a result of that I bought my first Mk1 1300 Sport, I was hooked. I used to go to WR Davies in Welshpool just to see the cars. New Mexicos. RS1600's, RS2000's and RS3100's all lined up in the back in all the colours you wished for, what a splendid sight, I only wished I had taken a picture of them.

                          The Mk2 RS's had been the last in the line of some truly exiting cars. We liked them because they looked good, even a bog standard Escort looked good, and was soon made to perform well with an old Cortina engine fitted into it. They could also be made to ressemble the more expensive RS'S with a bit of cash spent on them. They were affordable when new, they performed well, were easily modified, engines/gearboxes, suspensions were easily interchangable, plenty of companies providing performance parts in which to choose from, and dead easy to fix.

                          So when the Mk3 came out in late 1980, for me it was all over, and sadly never to be repeated again.
