  • New Steam locomotive!

Who thought steam locos where a thing of the past?

This week the first british new Express Steam Passenger Locomotive since the 1950's was delivered to the Great Central Railway at Loughborough for running trials, after having been steamed for the first time recently.

Named "Tornado", the Peppercorn A1 4-6-2 locomotive is due for duties pulling steam special passenger trains over parts of the main line network later on this year.

The loco is built to a design that was last seen in the 1960's, when all of the class ended up for scrap.

But what an achievement though, and it's a one off! Makes remanufacturing quality parts for our Escorts seem trivial!

It took 19 years from planning and 11 years to build at a cost of £3 million, which is down to more than 2,000 regular monthly and other donors, sponsors and the hard work of volunteers and contractors.
