A good bit of research here John. Interesting to see how the dealers had changed in comparison to the older list. So it looks like UBM Motors were taken over or replaced by Godfreys in Cardiff, so Godfreys would have supplied the car new, and that is probably the way you want to go. Earl of Chippenham Ltd could have bought the car second hand and sold it to a later owner.

the 1st sheet that I got from DVA with the 1st owner registration has two boxs on it one box states original dealer which has godfrey motor co cardiff then the second box has the selling dealer earl of Chippenham who may not have been an RS dealer hence why it came through godfreys.

heres the link to alot of other RS adverts and dealers not Mk1 and 2 but still worth a look.

When I bought my first RS in 1979 from City Speed in Gloucester it was only 14 months old and one owner. On the number plates it had "RF Tilley Autos", which suggested they sold the car when new, but as far as I know they were not ever RS Dealers. It had a XPA plate which means a Guildford registration, and could have been supplied firstly by A Gray & Co Ltd located there, so this type of thing went on a bit! I never found out who RF Tilley were!

Wow, what a bloke! I'm amazed Andy, this is a blast from the past!

I realised last night that their name was stamped as suppying dealer on the old service book which I still have.

So who are they? Where they a ford dealer or what sort of dealer where they?

Got a letter back today with 3 photos from an owner that owned the car from 86-88. He blew the original engine up then replaced it with a refurbished 2.0l.Great wee bits of info that piece together pieces of the jigsaw for me.He bought the car in 86 for £1700.The photos he sent have the car on minilites, when I got it, it was on compomotives and had the 2.0 in it.There had also been a rocket box in it when he had it.Finishes of with wishes he had kept the car.
PS he got a phonecall from Nothingham Police 1 week after selling it as it had been at the scene of a crime

I do not think Earl's were RS dealers. Thet were later taken over by Hewitts. The building has since been demolished and Ford in Chippenham is on the A4 calne side.

A great result for you John, well worth while!

It's nice when you get these snippets through and start to piece that jig-saw together.

I'm sure in the rwd Escort period quite a lot of RS cars were sold by ordinary Ford dealers, not RS dealers. What I'm not sure about is whether they all had to come via an RS dealer to the selling dealer ie. whether Ford would ever release RS cars direct to a non-RS Ford dealer. The cases I know of all involved the non-RS Ford dealer sourcing the car from an RS dealer.
Ford was the most protective of any UK manufacturer/importer of its dealers in some respects. It was a major struggle to get Ford to sell large volumes of vehicles direct to even the largest Government departments (other than in wartime). Their first negotiating stance was always to demand they supplied via a dealer. To win tenders they obviously had to give the dealer they nominated in their response extra discount - and large purchasers usually eventually negotiated the dealer out of the link but it was interesting just how hard Ford tried to keep them in it. No other vehicle supplier was like Ford in that respect.
Conversely Ford had a reputation of treating their smaller dealers like sh*t in their normal relationships...
